Botched paint job - 7 years ago

It's quite apparent from some angles/shades of light that the paint on my car door isn't consistent with the rest of the car. I couldn't tell when I bought the car.

A HPI check didn't show up any previous accidents. I didn't check the Service History printout (3 pages) as all the stamps were in the service book and consistent with the mileage.

Upon inpecting the Service History printout for the last 7 years - (it was on finance/lease to a business I think) it shows that Bodywork Repair was carried out to the tune of about £2000 from VW back in 2001.

Although whoever signed for the job on completion was the customer and signed to say they were satisfied with the quality of the work done at the time.
  • I was not the customer so VW don't really have a Sales of Goods/Services contract with me.
  • The job was done 7 years ago
  • It is possible that the door could have been repainted by somebody else in the last 6 years.
Can I make any form of claim for bad workmanship?
The original dealership that did the job is based down south and I'm in the north west, if my claim is valid, would my local dealer be obliged to correct the job?
How do I go about getting this sorted?
Thanks

you pay for it to be repaired, like anyone else would.
the job is 7 years old, the car is older than this obviously so there isnt any warranty, and i doubt there will be an anti perforation warranty as you never bought the car new.

i doubt it would cost £2000 to sort even although vw charged this a local body repair centre should be able to spray it for much less maybe £200 - £300 max. but it will never match the rest of the car.

I agree with the above, all too long ago and to me a seven year old car is entering banger category where you would expect blemishes.

Have you tried polishing it that might help? Obviously it wasn't that bad when you bought it or you would have noticed then.

LoL the paint is nowhere near a major concern for me, just that I noticed it and thought I would see if I could chance it.

I would expect any reputable bodyshop to be able to match a repaint as far as it woudn't be noticeable at all... maybe my expectations are too high.

Weather (or whether) the job was done 7 years ago or 7 days ago doesn't detract from the fact that the paint doesn't match - bad workmanship.

It's really slight mis-match and I would only get it redone if somebody would do it for about £70 (extremely unlikely) - that's how much it bothers me. I'm just looking for a free ride.

Well if you're chancing it why not spend the £70 on a County Court Summons?

So the £2000 probably included a load of stuff that wasn't needed. Thats how they make their money.
A neighbour LIGHTLY scuffed my dad's Accord bumper so he took it to Honda for an estimate for repair and they wanted to fit a new bumper at a cost of £500! So I had it sprayed at work for a hundred notes and got the neighbour to cough up.

Also, the £2000 repair could be anything. Does it state on the print outs that it's the same panel's that you're referring to? It could have had a slide into a kerb in the snow and bust an alloy and a suspension leg and possibly the a/c compresser.

Another thing - maybe they too chose to get it done for £70 and their mate in the VW dept raided the parts bin for a load of spares to flog on ebay. It happend - a mate of mine works for ****** and often does this.

Plus the panel could have been resprayed yet again.

My last also, - HPI only record it if it's been written off, not just for a panel replaced or a bumper scuffed.

Surely you can't say that! Cost shouldn't come into it. If they paid to have a paint job then the colour should match. But then your eyes goldie aren't very good are they.

I think OP is right, paint should match.

I've been asking our bodyshop to touch me up for ages and they still haven't done it.
