So the £2000 probably included a load of stuff that wasn't needed. Thats how they make their money.
A neighbour LIGHTLY scuffed my dad's Accord bumper so he took it to Honda for an estimate for repair and they wanted to fit a new bumper at a cost of £500! So I had it sprayed at work for a hundred notes and got the neighbour to cough up.

Also, the £2000 repair could be anything. Does it state on the print outs that it's the same panel's that you're referring to? It could have had a slide into a kerb in the snow and bust an alloy and a suspension leg and possibly the a/c compresser.

Another thing - maybe they too chose to get it done for £70 and their mate in the VW dept raided the parts bin for a load of spares to flog on ebay. It happend - a mate of mine works for ****** and often does this.

Plus the panel could have been resprayed yet again.

My last also, - HPI only record it if it's been written off, not just for a panel replaced or a bumper scuffed.
It doesn't have a breakdown of what was repaired but I had already assumed it would have been light/moderate damage for it to cost that much. (It was only about 4 months old when the repair was done- ouch!)

I also acknowledge that that particular door could have been done by anybody at any point in the vehicle's lifetime.

Depending on the response I got on this forum, If I had a legal standing (which it appears I don't) I would have contacted the dealer to find out if they had kept details on their records of what work was done to the car.

I think OP is right, paint should match.
    .

And that's right. However you've got new paint matching in with old paint. The new paint will maintain its original colour a lot longer than the old paint which would have been degrading a few years so several years down the line, you'll end up with a mismatch. It's basic chemistry/physics. The only time the two are likely to fade at the same rate is if the repair was done in the first couple of years and even then, only if its a colour not noted for fading quick as reds are.

Surely if you bought the car with mismatched paint you haven't got a leg to stand on? I would have thought if you tried to claim in the small claims court they would just throw it out and say you should have checked more carefully. Caveat Emptor etc.

But the paint job was only 7 years ago. And re a previous poster, reds don't fade like they used to.

Should've matched it up properly in the first place. I would complain. Mainly because I am good at complaining.

I know! I can't quite understand it myself. I'm only after a little touch up round the front bit. You'd think they'd oblige.

If the paint doesn't match in certain light conditions, then in certain other light conditions it will match!

The car was first registered on 24/04/01 ... the document shows the accident repair carried out on 09/10/01... I wouldn't have expected the original paint to have deteriorated within a matter of months... even if the car was built 6 months before first registration

I wouldn't be making a claim against the person I bought the car from... it was bought from private individual... so sold as seen.

I'm 'alleging' that the bodywork didn't match the paint correctly. I could ring the garage to find out if they got records and if the door was done. I would just have no way of knowing/proving if the door had been resprayed again since.

I'll tell you what... I shall seek advice from CAB/local trading standards.:D Let you know what they say.

Either I'll get it re-sprayed for nothing (unlikely) or I just carrying on driving happily as I am.

There's no way you have any right to any repair. You don't have a contract with the original repairer, and even if you did, after 6 years any claim would be timed out, and that's not even taking into consideration of other factors like, acceptance of the repair as satisfactory, expectant quality of the repair to last a certain length of time.

This is why if you need a door or a wing resprayed they should do the whole
side of the car, so that you do not see differences between the doors and the wings.

The reason you see the difference in different lights is because of the UV properties of the paint. It is impossible to match a paint to the existing paint on a car, that's why they do the whole side of the car.
