I want to put the the three posts above in as quotes but don't know how to do more than one quote at a time! (mardartha, not enough cash and Ada Doom).

When the Leccy strikes were on in the 70's; what did we do?

Listen to the radio (ran off batteries) , play card and board games; cook on a coal fire in the lounge (obviously limited type meals)!!!!!!!!!

Listening actually takes a great deal of concentration; I'm so ashamed that I haven't listened to the radio for such a long time. (By listening I mean radio 3 or 4).

I remember the 70's and winter of discontent etc...we would be watching a programme (only 3 channels in those days) and everything would go off 1/2 way through. We were only kids but we used to play dominoes, snakes and ladders, draughts and make shadow puppets by candlelight!

:p I remember during the ITV strike in the 70s... we did our own Coronation Street storyline using my brother's cassette recorder. I remember it involved Tracy Langton being killed by the Rovers wall collapsing (a wish-fulfilment version of a story they'd already had, when Deidre only thought she'd been killed!), and Albert Tatlock's nose exploded at one point too! We replayed it for Mum and Dad's entertainment.:rotfl:

[There's something really satisfying about listening to the "wireless" as opposed to tv. If it's a play or a drama then the sound effects are quite interesting ! I try to imagine what they're using to make the noise with..]

    Don't forget Monopoly!!!!!!!

Actually there is one I can't resist - a nice big jigsaw puzzle! That even wins from the laptop, hands down. Trouble is, I find it so addictive I will still be sitting there jigsawing till deep into the night. One winter I even did my back in that way, just bending over the table for long periods of time.
Now that I have remembered jigsaws I may go to the attic and dig one out....... if I do, you won't see me here for a while :-)

I would put another vote in for the radio - if you have digital radio Radio7 has excellent detective series and comedy - and a children's time in the afternoon - it was better but is now more CBeebies. It's also easier to knit or sew or crochet whilst listening to the radio.

We have been threatening to make Ds1 read the Sherlock |Holmes stories out loud - we have audio tapes in the car - they would be nice to listen too as well.

Ds1/ dh play cricket sometimes with a die - think one episode of the Good life - ds1 recently did World dictators vs our family - I scored very well whilst Juan Perron was a sad disappointment!!

  • I'm afaid I do household chores which sounds very boring but it's so much more fun than just vegging out in front of the telly. I put a real sing along CD on and bop about while I'm at it!:j Good job I live alone. :rotfl:
