That's really not even close to being true. You may need an MOT to get a tax disc, but there's no reason why you need to keep a valid MOT during the time it's taxed. Of course, driving it (or even parking it) on public roads will be illegal, as you're required to have a valid MOT, but it's nothing to do with tax.

Very few insurance policies require a valid MOT for the car to remain insured. Mine certainly doesn't, and no policy I've ever held have. I know a small number of policies do make that requirement, but it's not an automatic thing that many assume.

Wrong. Car tax validation doesn't depend on the status of the MOT and it's extremely rare to find a policy which states its void if there's no MOT.

I really am baffled - i cannot see what the huge problem is here?!!! A garage trying to be helpful and ringing in advance albeit ring the 'wrong' number - the message still got to the intended person.

DPA states that data must be kept accurate and upto date and that the data holder must not divulge information to 3rd party.

Whooop di whoo... they phoned your mum and told her your MOT was due to expire (or incorrectly said it had already expired). A small mistake by a faithful local garage that may (or may not) be well versed in the Data Protection Act of 1974 (Amended in 1998)

Consider that you were not aware your MOT was due for renewal in 10 days (like alot of people do forget even though it is their responsibility to know ths)... the garage phoned up to let you know in good time but because you weren't they they didn't want to tell your mum to even pass the message on, who the call was from or what it was regarding.

About ringing the incorrect number,you stated that you have same surname as your parents, your family gets their cars serviced their and your dad has just recently been in. The garage only had to do a search using surname to cause the mixup... easily done!

Alot of people come on this site to contribute and seek advice as well as to better themselves financially and to find bargains (amongst other reasons). This just semed like you wanted to rant and vent your frustaration somewhere.

OP get a grip, the garage was trying to be helpful!!! !!!!!! is this world coming to...they phoned your mum for gods sake, to tell her about your MOT, not a stranger with your bank details!!!!!
