What happens to all the pups for sale...

First they'll drop the price to try and sell it, they might end up as 'free to good home' or they sometimes they end up dead, sometimes they end up in rescue. They also get bought up by puppy brokers who sell them on cheap through free ads or to pet shops, lying about their age to make them seem more desirable. There are other possibilities, most of them are much worse than these, PTS is definitley not the worst that can happen to them.
Poor pups :-(When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.0 -
If you want to foster then try www.oldies.org.uk - they operate throughout the UK and are always in need of foster homes and they are very nice ladies
Tell them Tine says hi
Can't stand DogPages myself - but then each to their own... I just don't like the owner of the site
The pups... any reputable and responcible breeder pretty much has homes lined up before taking their b!tch to a stud. And if they haven't homes lined up they will be prepared to keep the pups themselves and maybe home them later.
The backstreet pups... the lucky ones are handed in to rescues...
For the others - they get dumped from cars, they get tied to rescue gates because people can't be bothered to hand them over properly, they get put down, they get passed to anyone who wants them... or they get put down in some cases...
I now know 2 breeders and both of them have been very prepared to keep their pups if they couldn't find good homes for them - to the point of actually home checking the new owners before letting the pups go!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -

Maybe the current financial situation will make people think long and hard about buying a dog, rather than buying 'on impulse' when cash is plentiful, then regretting it when it behaves like a dog, not some designer 'purchase'..
i.e. the sort of people who buy a £800 toy dog or 'designer' (ha ha, righto) crossbreed seem to me to want a glamorous accessory, a status symbol, not a living being that makes demands, craps on the carpet and chews up your flashy shoes!
If only that would be true....
Some of the posters on these very boards have gone off and bought pups - yet have posted on other boards how tight money is and how big their debts are (and this board is just a tiny example of the population as a whole). Im afraid while there are still people like that in the world - puppy farmers will prosper and animals will suffer:mad::mad:0 -

Hi see you have a dobe do you want to keep another dog or just foster one till a home comes up , look up under breeding dobe on here there is a couple of links there re rescue .
but any well most might need help transporting a dog to a center or taking in a urgent case till a space becomes free.0 -
Thanks for the info everyone. I just want to contact all these puppy sellers and say if they can't sell I'll have 'em - not practical of course and no I won;t do that.
And thanks Dobiesmon, yes, we have our lovely dobie, don't know if there's room in my heart for another dobe. But you never know! I was originally thinking that we'd like to rescue a dog but thinking further, as she's the only one, it'd be unfair going down that route only to have to take the doggie back if there was out and out war. But maybe I'm thinking wrongly here.
So I thought it would be good to foster, have a few 'sleep overs' and see how things go. Knowing me though I'll probably end up rescuing more than one and still be fostering too.:D
I've signed up to a couple of rescue centres :eek:0 -
We are so so lucky here in Birmingham that the Dogs Home (whilst not the best rescue in the world) takes all the abandoned dogs picked up by the dog warden (including lots of litters of puppys, mainly staffs) and never ever puts a healthy dog down.
We got our boy from there. I would love another one (or two!) but he doesn't like other dogs so we can't. Luckily though I know that there aren't any dogs round here that will be put down through lack of a home.
We used to foster overnight when a dog got picked up by the police out of hours. The warden doesn't work outside office hours so when there is a stray, the police get them and they go in the police kennel overnight until the warden takes them to the Dogs Home in the morning.
My OH is a police officer and he used to bring any home that were going to be there overnight, then the warden would get them from our house instead.
They were often really young and frightened and the kennel at the station is dirty and pitch dark. The officers do go in and fuss them, but it is still horrible.
I loved doing this, and would often get a call from my OH from work at about 2am telling me to come and pick a dog up! I took them home, gave them something nice to eat and a warm bath and a cuddle.
Luckily most weren't with us long enough to get too attached, but one little staff stayed with us while the Dogs Home was full. He was a little rascal, biting our feet, could open any door in the house (inc the front door!), and was just so so naughty. But he was so cute and was only 5 months old. I loved him so much, and when the time came for him to go to the Dogs Home I cried my eyes out! We couldn't keep a dog at the time due to our tenancy.
Sadly that has all stopped now since we have our dog.0 -

Thats fantastic news, the more people who can help a rescue the more dogs that can be saved:T:T:T:T:T0 -

.
Unfortunately here in N.I - animal rescues are not a high priorityWe have the Dog Trust and they do a fantastic job - but they cant help every dog thats on death row.
And here death row is always full and not all dogs get the 7 days grace
Unfortunately here its common practice for dog owners to have at least one planned litter and neutering and spaying are not the done thing and dogs are let out to walk themselves
Our local pound would break your heart
The free ads are full of "home needed ads"
I would love to be a more regular fosterer or even rescue a few dogs myself, but my lad is an "only dog" as well0 -

Oh that's so so sad. I don't think I could bear it. I wanted to take all the dogs home with me when I went to get our current dog, but the only thing that stopped me getting too upset was to know that they weren't going to be put down.
Whenever we have spare blankets that we don't need I take them down to the Dog's Home, they are always looking for them, and somtimes some dog treats as well if they are on special offer.
It is a shame that there isn't some sort of neutering scheme whereby you have to get your dog neutered unless you have a licence for breeding pedigrees or something? I know it would be difficult to police though. Our dog is a cross but at least he did have a loving owner before us, they died. But there are so many crosses that must be "accidents" and so many little staffys that people breed then practically chuck away when they realise they are little softies and not the hard dog they were after.
I know that the RSPCA convicted more people of animal cruelty this year which shows they are trying to sort it out, but my OH gets called to dogs at work that people ring up 999 and say "There is a vicous Rottie in the street trying to bite people". When he arrives it is often a big soft rottie, sometimes a baby, who kids are poking with a stick. No wonder the dog snaps at them.
One rottie he found was having glass bottles thrown at it to "stop it biting people" (which it wasn't). When grabbed her by the collar she was shaking like a leaf and she tried to climb on to his lap in the back of the police car because she was so scared.
I don't know how RSPCA workers do it they do an amazing job, it must be absolutely heart breaking for them.
My OHs parents, when they are ready for another dog after their's died yesterday are hopefully going to get a rescue. They had theirs from a puppy but I think now they realise there are so many lovely dogs around and they are now very experienced owners, they would rather rescue one.0 -
...when no one buys them?
I was thinking of adding to our family and was searching for an adult, but there's so many pups for sale, and some of them are soooo expensive. With everyone having to tighten their belts at the moment, what'll happen in the doggie world. I've already read one rescue site where one dog was handed in as the owner 'couldn't afford it anymore due to the recession'
I'd live on beans on toast rather than get rid (the dobe is resting her head on my arm and staring at me now cos it's teatime)
Also, can anyone tell me what the criteria is to become a dog fosterer? I work 5 hours a day so I'm guessing I wouldn't be suitable?
Get a rescue dog... breeders will stop breeding unwanted pups if people stop paying for them! Plus many many many of the rescue dogs you'll see when searching will be 6months +. These are the puppies people either couldn't sell or simply got bored of.0
