What happens to all the pups for sale...

Options
...when no one buys them?

I was thinking of adding to our family and was searching for an adult, but there's so many pups for sale, and some of them are soooo expensive. With everyone having to tighten their belts at the moment, what'll happen in the doggie world. I've already read one rescue site where one dog was handed in as the owner 'couldn't afford it anymore due to the recession'

I'd live on beans on toast rather than get rid (the dobe is resting her head on my arm and staring at me now cos it's teatime :D )

Also, can anyone tell me what the criteria is to become a dog fosterer? I work 5 hours a day so I'm guessing I wouldn't be suitable?

Dogs for sale who dont get homes? Destroyed

if they are lucky they find a home in a rescue

And you would be fine for a fosterer, ring around the rescues you are interested in helping and ask to be considered. Not every dog is suitable to be fostered in a working household but many are

I've had a rescue staffie for a month now and no amount of recession would make me get rid of her!
That's so sad that the pups get destroyed :(

The breeders phone Rescue Centres and offer them to them 'cheap'

Or generously 'donate' them thinking the charity will be able to 'make money' from a pedigree

Don't get me started on back street breeders:mad:

Regarding Fostering, you could call around your local rescues and offer, they might have a dog that needs a quiet homeaway from the stress of the kennels, if not they could keep your number for future use maybe
Some days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree! :D

OMG Suki, that's such a sad thought.

So even though I work some places would OK me? Not quite sure who to contact, I live in the Midlands area, any ideas?

My doggie is fine with other dogs, just ignores them usually, even in the house - an unknown spaniel came hurtling in the back door the other day and fell over her while she was asleep on the floor :D

Backstreet breeders - would that be people who let their dogs have pups and say they're bred as pets only, no KC paperwork? There was a lot of crossbreed pups too. And loads of Staffies in rescue.

    What a damn shame.
  • one good thing is if the sele of puppies starts to slow down, sooner or later the breeders will stop breeding so many -supply and demand!

Maybe the current financial situation will make people think long and hard about buying a dog, rather than buying 'on impulse' when cash is plentiful, then regretting it when it behaves like a dog, not some designer 'purchase'..

i.e. the sort of people who buy a £800 toy dog or 'designer' (ha ha, righto) crossbreed seem to me to want a glamorous accessory, a status symbol, not a living being that makes demands, craps on the carpet and chews up your flashy shoes!

As mirrorimage says, dog pages is a great place to start. The other thing is to think if there is any particular breed of dog you think your home is most suited for and ring the breed rescue. If you feel you really want to help rescue puppy farm breeders then you cant go far wrong contacting manytears - and to anyone whos looking at this thread whos thinking of buying a pup from a pet shop/backstreet breeder/unrecognised breeder then may I suggest they too take a look at http://www.!!!!!!!!!!!!!/manytearsrescue/index.htm

hmm seems this site doesnt like the address - thinks its a swear word :)

    where the exclamation marks are in the address type f r e e w e b s - without the spaces :)

    What's a backstreet breeder?

backstreet breeder is anyone whos got a dog/b1tch and thinks " wow he/she cost me 500 quid, lets breed and make a few 500 quids tax free ourselves". Backstreet breeders are those that think a b1tch HAS to have at least one litter before being spayed. Backstreet breeders is a name that can be used for anyone who is breeding for any other reason then to improve or protect a breed
