I was in a bit of shock really and said that no, I wouldn't take the dog there and then (I hadn't even met it at that point). Then after we'd seen it (it was very sweet) I said I'd have to discuss with my family and call them back. As I walked away the doggie was standing there looking after us and I had a HUGE lump in my throat. I'd have been picking it up if they hadn't rung me to say someone else was interested, was I going to take it or what?

One thing that unnerved me was that the girl we went for a walk with didn't know what sex the doggie was and said that (despite giving a history on the web) all their dogs were strays, they didn't know what any of them were like and it was a risk you took. Whilst I appreciate this I thought rescues did tests, sort of? Or am I just being naieve?

Its like everything in life, there are good and bad in rescues,

Some are well run, where they know all there is to know about the dog, where the dogs get any medical treatment needed, where they are tested in different envoirments so they know what sort of home would be good for them , where possible new owners are home checked and vetted, where the animal is neutered or spayed before leaving - there are others less organised.

Theres many people who with nothing more then a good heart set themselves up in rescue, which isnt so wrong but is not ideal.

I think you need to find yourself a more (for the sake of a better description ) "reputable" rescue Perhaps get in touch with the dogs trust or go join dog pages and ask for pointers in the forums. You could also try at the dog lounge - I know the moderator there is very much involved in rescue

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I'm stunned, I've been to a rescue centre to see a doggie I saw on the web and they said to bring a photo of my garden and the dog was ready to go so I could take it home with me there and then   . And it wasn't a foster place they were talking about.

That's horrific:eek: While I'm sure that yours (and most others) are good homes, anyone could walk in there and take a dog away presumably?

Also, from a safety aspect no one knows if these dogs are good with other dogs, cats, kids etc.....while some of the bigger rescues annoy me at times because they seem to put so many obstacles in peoples way when they try to adopt a pet there has to be a happy medium surely?

I know what suki1964 means about rescuers that take on too much.....I see it often with people who take on an animal without having the time, money and facilities to take good care of it but with the best of intentions IYSWIM.
That's just about about acceptable if it's only 1 or 2 dogs, cats, horses whatever but it can get out of hand so quickly.....and then you get animals passed on without any real care or regard to the pet AND the new owner so another one can be *rescued*

That's not saying that many many small rescues aren't doing fantastic work btw just that some people get a bit mixed up on the difference between genuine rescue( a suitable lifetime home as far is possible) and just moving dogs on asap.
