I'd definately recommend the puppy pads over newspaper. The puppy pads help with the training as they are slightly scented to help the pup know where to go. Plus they soak up any mess just like nappies.....newspaper doenst do that...it's really messy!

I use puppy pads with my puppy and would never use anything else.

Saying that though, i'd recommend encouraging your puppy to go to the toilet outside asap. Remember that they can go in the garden before they've had the jabs, just not out in public where other animals have been. I just use the pads as an emergency incase of any accidents.

    :o

Thanks. I agree with you and I am going to take her into the back garden regulally each day. I am just thinking about possible overnight accidents and when we go out so thats why I am getting the crate and wondering what to line it with.
  • You will probably find if the crate is not too big that she won't go overnight in the crate. Dogs don't usually like to toilet in their beds. I had my puppy in a cardboard box next to my bed for the first couple of weeks until he got too big and i never had a night time accident. Just had to get up really early for a while until he learned to hold it.
  • Getting a new addition to our family in the next few weeks a cockapoo puppy. Anyone recc any good deals or websites for items we may need i.e crates, bowls, brushes, bedding etc.

we used paper but only inside the back door ..

you can usually spot the signs! and you'll become quickly able to spot the "sniff" ... they usually sniff the floor for a few seconds or walk round in circles before choosing a spot to "go" quickly scoop up and take outside ...

its a good idea to find a place you want them to go to the loo and then use a word! .. we always used to say "go wee wees!" then reward! its a hugeeeeeeeeee game ! ...
the paper was for accidents we didnt time correctly
another thing you can do is ... take out after they wake from a good sleep or after theyve been playing and a few mins after eating to ..
Have fun :) and enjoy your new bundle!
i also agree with daveyliver we used to take the water up at around 9ish for the night while very young
Hoping to be a thinner me in 2010!

I'd stick to paper - and isn't it more environmentally friendly than the pads?

As has been mentioned, both are unnecessary, it is simply another step to master when it comes to house training. Frequently puppies fail to tell the difference between puppy pads and other similar white object and will pee on your bathmat. And as for newspapers, they wont tell be able to tell the difference between your unread sunday paper and the one specifically for them.

The beauty of crate training is that puppies hate to "go" when they have to sleep near it, so it helps to train them that bit quicker. If left in overnight they will have to. Remember when you are around that puppy's have comparatively tiny bladders so let them out as much as possible!

And ignoring any messes the pup makes in the house will help. If you scold the puppy for going in the house he or she might be more reluctant to go at all...risking damaging themself. Praise the pup when s/he goes where you want to.

Edit: Oh, and dogs should NEVER be left without water!!! Especially not overnight.
  • I agree with Jellicat,
Esp in the summer, we've had afew hot nights and ive had to get up for some water because im too warm and i like to think if my pups are thirsty they can get some water whenever. To be honist id rather them have an accident then be without water!

Absolutely! Tilly hardly drinks any water, but she still has a bowl in the lounge, one in the kitchen, and one in our bedroom.

We used puppy pads for the first few weeks. We didn't have any problem house training our pup.

Be sure not to leave water by the puppy overnight and try to give it a drink some time before settling the dog down.
