I agree with pretty much everything that has been suggested but another thing that I have tried in the past is moving the puppy training pad nearer and nearer to the door. If you see your pup go near the pad then it'll be close to the external door so you can get it outside quickly. Althougth the other methods are preferable, if a pup has been trained to the pad then using it in conjunction with frequent trips outside is probably the way to go.0

Picking up my new puppy in just over 4 weeks so have been glued to this thread. I've been adv/read lots of different things and looking for advice. I am getting a Cockerpoo, what size crate is best. Also in crate, i presume there will be bed, bowl toys etc, if I am not wanting to paper train pup but just keep taking him outside do I therefore not line crate with anything? Will this be too difficult for puppy? or is the correct thing to do rather than having to go through 2 stages of toilet training, paper then outside. Also re washig powder for carpets, which one is best? if its powder do you sprinkle over or scrub in as a paste?Jan Grocery challenge

I'm with Suki about getting up in the night to take the pup out. We've found that it helps to speed up the process of house training. Makes it more exhausting, but we've done that for all of ours and found it well worth the effort.0

CPF,
I would suggest a meduim size crate - they do good ones on Ebay. If you do not plan to leave puppy in crate for long periods of time toilet training is do-able all the same. Please dont leave your dog with access to alot of water - 1 it could drown, 2 it will drink it all and need to pee destroying your hard work.
Use a biological washing powder, can use on wood, laminate etc also with mop and bucketDFW Total £21,800 to clear by Dec 2022

What is the best to buy in terms of helping housetrain your pup? We are getting a puppy on Friday and are going to crate train her . I know the pads are supposed to be pricey but are they worth it? Thanks.0

I'd definately recommend the puppy pads over newspaper. The puppy pads help with the training as they are slightly scented to help the pup know where to go. Plus they soak up any mess just like nappies.....newspaper doenst do that...it's really messy!
I use puppy pads with my puppy and would never use anything else.
Saying that though, i'd recommend encouraging your puppy to go to the toilet outside asap. Remember that they can go in the garden before they've had the jabs, just not out in public where other animals have been. I just use the pads as an emergency incase of any accidents.:beer:0 -
With a new puppy? Both!!
Puppy pads on top of newspaper, at least until he/she gets the idea.:wave:0 -
Neither!
By using puppy pads or newspaper, you are training your pup that it's OK to go inside, and then a few weeks down the line you'll change the rules and have to retrain the pup to go outside. Better to start as you mean to go on with the puppy only going outside - take him/her out every half hour, and after meals, after play and after sleep and the pup will have plenty of opportunity to do the 'right' thing and you'll have plenty of opportunity to praise him/her."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
Get the puppy pads! There plastic underneith stops any drips and is just generally better. There not too expensive. You can buy a pack of them from poundworld, so maybe stock up?! lol And you might be lucky enough to catch poundworld on a half price day so a pack would be be 50p!
Cheaper then a newspaper! lol
Georgina makes a good point. But when we were training she had the odd accident in a certain corner of the room, so we use to put a puppy pad down in the corner just incase. She learnt to go outside but if for some reason she had an accident, she did it on the puppy pad and it was easy to clean up.I'm getting married in August 2015:j0 -

As for the washing powder, use a solution of biological powder to wash the area. If you don't dissolve it, you get a white grainy residue."No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0
