Free Texts on Orange Contract Phones

Hmmm - have just tried to cancel my 'subscription' to this service before I have to pay, and it turns out that this is NOT an offer from Orange. Orange customer services cannot put a stop to the billing (apparently there is a loophole in the law and if you reply to a rogue text such as this, it is assumed that you have 'contracted in' to that company so they can bill your telephone number for ever). They are trying to do something about this, but it will take a while - in the meantime do NOT EVER reply to any 'special offer' by text, unless you have first checked that it is your service provider who offers it.0

I've just tried to cancel this before I start having to pay the £2 monthly ... it turns out this is NOT an offer from Orange, and Orange customer services CANNOT cancel the subscription. Apparently there is a current loophole in the law which means that if you send a text to one of these rogue numbers, you have 'contracted in' to that company and it can bill your telephone number for life (even if you don't know the company, and have been mislead). The advice is to NEVER send a text for a special/free offer unless you have checked that the offer is from your service provider. Orange are trying to do something about this but it will not be resolved until a while into the future. I've tried sending a note 'Cancel' to the same number, 1127, so let's see if it works. I doubt it somehow. >:(0

Which service is causing the problem, sjcl?
The Orange free texts (which this thread originally was discussing) is definitely an Orange promotion (part of their "Try" offers).0 -
Sorry for the delay - have been away .... You are correct - I called back Orange helpline after your reply and I was 100% mis-informed by the first person I spoke with at Orange. Apparently the reason that they couldn't take the service off my phone was that it hadn't been implemented as my phone is a corporate one (there was a different procedure to go through to set this offer up on a corporate phone). The 2nd Orange customer service person was super and even credited my Orange account. Thank-you.0

Hi, I am on PAYG sent my "TEXT" to 1127, got the text will be activated soon, that was 4 days ago, so called 450 only to be told that this was a promotion to people who had NEVER sent a text and for them to try it, so as I had texted before I was not eligible.... >:(What goes around - comes around

Free texts from my phone sounds very good, I'll try it. But is it possible to send free texts via the web direct from my computer? Has anyone any advice?
yes download a free copy of genietexter from http://www.genietexter.co.uk/about.php
and to find out how to use it read the tutorial on the site.

They immediately send a reply, and then you need to await a second text confirming the 30 free ones have been applied to your account.
The 30 free ones are valid for one month. *If you want to continue having 30 texts each month they will add £2 per month onto your bill.
To opt out, contact customer services.

My Orange phone is registered as a business phone and I sent the text, received the first one saying they would send a second when it was set up but I never received it. I rang and they said the free texts are not available for business contract phones !!! I am only a one-man band, so it seems a bit harsh, but there you go.Smartasss wrote:Send an SMS with the word Text to 1127.
