The heat in Turkey
Comments

Although temps are forecast for 30C plus, real temperatures are 40C plus at the moment with tarmac melting, plastic toys and plastic glasses frames melting too!
We are off there next week, was wondering if anyone had any useful advice to stay fit and safe. Obviously drinking water is going to be important, stay out of the sun most of the day, wear factor 50 sun cream and make the kids wear their hats etc. Anything else to add?
Spent a fortnight in Sharm last year and never experienced any of that - even with temperatures in the mid-50s,Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -

Gotta agree, I've been in Cyprus once when our themonmeter reach 54c (on the beach, in the sun), but no actual plastic melted.
But you couldn't sit on ANYTHING in the sun without a towel & you had to wear your sandals right into the pool:rotfl:
If you bought an ice-cream you had to eat it as soon as they handed it to you:D
It was mental0 -
Forgot to mention earlier if you get cramps the likley reason is you need salt You do loose alot when you sweat.
Headaches are an early sign of dehydration Keep your fluid levels much higher than you expect 1 large 1.5 Lt bottle is NOT enough per dayJust A Grumpy old Jedi0 -
ARLYBARLY
MEANT TO SAY HAVE A TURKISH BATH AS SOON AS YOU GET THERE, its fab (Oh I hope you see that before you go) & get the oil massage afterways. Probably cost £20 to £30 for the whole lot & well worth it.
If I'm going to Turkey, its one of my highlights.0 -
Get one of those little battery operated fans. I don't know if it really helps but it does make you feel a lot better if you can give yourself a quick blast

Have a nice time arlybarly.
Watch your luggage weight (especially coming back, they are bu66ers at Dalaman).
Also Dalaman airport is mega expensive, so make sure you eat before you leave to return & bring drinks with you.
Agree, their scales are way out!
they add about 3-5kg.
Small pizza is £15!0 -
I should have said that:o
I don't believe there is ANY waterproof or sweatproof sun cream, but the waterproof stuff will stick a bit more. BUT KEEP APPLYING.
I agree with you about it being a different heat, much more comfortable than the UK.
Have you been to Egypt? It makes the med seem humid, its soooooo dry.
Yes have been to Egypt, but never again! Popular Sharm resort, great hotel with attentive staff, but step outside..they rob you blind and swear at you if you don't step into their shop where they can rob you again - not just on goods, but literally rob you..
Never been to such a horrible place before, only good for the snorkeling and diving, and if you love neon lighting everywhere then maybe it's for you!
I go to Turkey (olu Deniz) every year, but with a 3yr old now I tend to go in May when it's quieter. Still hits the 30's, but it's nice and cool at night.
Regarding the sun lotion, there are these ALL DAY products out now? BIG WARNING, everyone I've seen you has used these have turned out lobster red and burned badly!0 -

I was in Sharm last month, we stayed at a new place about 5 miles outside Naama Bay, so not like Blackpool with neon palm trees;)
They are pushy, I can't deny. But I wouldn't let it put me off going, however I did prefer to get the hotel bus, rather than haggle with a cabbie for 10 minutes. As far as the shops, they weren't rude to us (more polite than the Turkish markets:rolleyes: ), but my hubby is a big bloke, plus hes very dark (hes English but so olive skinned & black hair) they often think hes an arab on holiday anyway. Same when we go to Greece or Turkey they often address him in the local lingo.
I love Olu (hubby hates all the mozzies there:rolleyes: ), I love swimming in the lagoon:D

Agreed to about the once stuff, I used Piz Buin. YOU NEED TO REAPPLY, especially if you use it on kids. It lasts longer than normal stuff, but not all day.0 -

How bad are the mozzies? Olu is the one place I do want to go to in Turkey but I react quite badly from midge/mozzie bites over here so now I'm worried that it might ruin my holiday if I get badly bitten over there

Bring a mosquito with you on your trip. Best thing you'll ever do. Everytime you go to sleep at night, just before switching off your light, give the mozzies your finger knowing the won't get you.
Such a fulfilling gesture!0
