Thats the problem, people immediately pigeon hole you for that sort of thing, although i've never heard of someone being done so for saying norn iron.
Personally I dont like saying Norn Iron, I prefer the full Northern Ireland:T

Some people don't like saying Northern Ireland! To them its synonomous with 'Ulster'.

Its a shame we have all this political crap here but certain words have certain connotations.

I dont think saying we come from 'Norn Iron' is going to help us not be stereotyped. Do you?

Stereotyped as what? People who have an affectionate nickname for their province?

What would it say? Would I have to carry a battery or would it be solar powered? I'd prefer solar but with this weather I don't think it would flash too much.

I never said there was. There also is no 9 county Ulster.
    There is in the GAA.

Ulster contains 9 counties, NI six. To call NI 'Ulster' is incorrect and annoys me far more than Norn Iron!

    Thank you.

Not everyone in Belfast has a Norn Iron accent.....and not every Belfast accent is horrible...although I still cringe listening to local news with back street billy and mandy!!!

Anyway...what about the delectable Cherry Velley accent....now THAT get's my goat!...lol :rotfl:

Heh, I saw him at the City Airport t'other week, looking all dapper in his high collared, crisp white shirt and his [strike]too tight[/strike] fitted pinstripe suit. He looked a bit better dressed than when he tried to rope me into conversation at the garage in Saintfield one day while doing promo work, it's all glamour for that boy :D

I love this thread, I think it's so funny what some people get annoyed about. I'm just glad that most of my family survived over 30 years of murder and mayhem. If the rest of the world aren't looking down their nose after all that I doubt they'd be bothered about a few people using local dialect. Anyone who would judge a person for something so trivial should catch a grip on their knickers and clearly aren't worth bothering with or about.

I grew up in a rural, middle class area of county down. My MIL is a sandy row woman born and raised, her accent is one of the harshest I've ever heard and my little SIL was such a milly when she was in her teens. If anyone ever made snide remarks to or about them based on their accents/dialect I'd give them a good thrashing with my riding crop and set the hounds on them :D
