    I think the key to being a healthy weight isn't mad diets, crazy gym routines (that you'll never keep up) or similar. It's playing sport you enjoy, and fitting exercise into your normal life.

    I'd be the first to admit I eat too much, I like eating. So I make sure OH and I play badminton regularly, we go swimming with our son, surfing and sailing on holiday, and I cycle and walk a lot. That means that although I think I'd be better off without half a stone (I'm just under 10 stone, and 5 ft 7, so I'm slightly overweight, I think), I'm sure I'd be a lot fatter if I ate what I do eat, and never moved off the sofa.

    I agree 100%, doing fun activities is the secret. I sometimes eat 2 dinners in 1 sitting, so I have to excercise to stay trim. I do not like much junk food though, indeed I feel pretty grim and 'stodgy' if I for example eat a pie. I find a good trick is to imagine how your last few meals must look in your system. This makes me crave healthy clean pure food if I've had a couple of junky meals.
    I always feel a bit icky when fatties slide British breakfasts down thier throats every day - I imagine thier poo must smell like dogs muck as they eat so much meat, rather than purish horse poo loaded with lots of fibre and non smelly rotting meat. Anway, Im just off to eat :rotfl:

    What is it with pies? Is it a Northern thing? I don't think I have ever eaten a pie in my life, but I found when I moved to Birmingham that lots of people buy them from the chip shop? Weird.

    I don't eat any red meat (not for health reasons) but I don't think a small amount of lean meat does you any harm as it has a lot of iron in it. Saying that though I donate blood regularly and have never been anaemic, but I do eat lots of spinach etc.

    No not aimed at you, but in spawned by the comment regarding fatties in the night club by that guy who pulls a lot.

    Ive got to say that British Women are far chunkier than those I see in the Mediteranea. Ive studied this many times on the beach - latin girls seem to be forever batting balls, swimming, heating small portions of salad and olives, which is in stark contrast to the fleshy English gals.
    I noticed this particularly in Greece where hardly any of the women where anything other than lythe and magical, and yes that includes the old ones too.

    Next time in an airport checkout the English queue compared to the Spannish / Greek or for that matter, Scandinavian.

    English blokes also seem a lot heftier and less fit in comparison to the latins.

    I agree totally! I was just laughing at the way the guy spoke about trying to pull, pointing out that he was about as much of a catch as the chubbier girls were.

    I personally prefer men with muscles (OH was an amatuer weightlifter and did Judo to a high level before he started training with me for marathons), so the latin look is not really attractive as I find a lot of them too skinny.

    I think the key is somewhere like Australia where they have an outdoors life style. I think that is why I love sport as I lived in New Zealand as a kid for a couple of years, and they have a similar attitude to sport there.

    I also saw the other side of the coin, living in Houston, Texas, the fattest city in the world. It is amazing how easy it is to overeat. People thought me and my parents were weird eating such a "small" amount. I can see how people who don't have anything to ground them (I had my parents for example) can start to believe those portion sizes are normal.

    Yep - any time spent in Europe (not the British holidaymaker areas) and taking a look at the people on the streets will confirm that Europeans are in general in much better shape than the average UK bod.

    Though obesity is a growing problem everywhere. People lead more sedentary lifestyles sitting around desks at work and watching TV at home. Fast/junk food is growing in popularity too, as people have less time to prepare fresh ingredients and cook food from scratch- even if they are minded to do so.

    Got to admit I'm as bad as anyone for this. I try to do lots of exercise like walking and cycling but given the rubbish weather my exercise regime has been suffering recently. When I lived abroad I used to do stacks of exercise, especially in the summer. You can't beat the weather in the British Isles for keeping you indoors - probably explains why pubs are so popular too actually.

    I think that the supermarkets trick us into thinking that we don't have time to cook food, when in fact I can cook a pasta dish, cooking the pasta while I make the sauce, in the same time as a pizza takes to put in the oven.
    Or I make a batch of sauce at the weekend and freeze it. Stirfry and noodles takes about 5 mins if you cut the veges and put in a box before hand.
    The slow cooker however is the best invention ever. I put the ingredients in (lentils, veges etc) in the morning while I wait for my porridge to cook, then when I come in from work I have a nice meal waiting for me!

    I think people are simply too lazy to be bothered to do it, and they never learn how to cook from their parents.

    Until recently I taught English to groups of French kids in the summer. They all played tennis and most of them played other sport as well. Two thirds of them played musical instruments and they were all thin.

    There are more public tennis courts in the Paris area than in the whole of the United Kingdom.

    Look, the reason people in Britain are overweight is GENETIC. These people are genetically programmed to eat food laden with fat, sugar and salt. They are programmed to avoid ANY food even remotely healthy and also to avoid any movement other than that which is essential - nothing excessive.

    So stop being nasty, they can't help it! :rolleyes:

    There was a BBC series about food and ideas like detoxing etc. It was the one where they put those people in the zoo and fed them the gorilla diet, remember? One of the things they did was to get two friends. One was thin and one a bit chubby. They both swore that the thinifer ate MUCH more than the chubbette. They gave the two some very expensive water with magic isotopes (or something) to drink and then collected their peepee and kaka. At the end of the week - which they filmed - the chubette was discovered to have taken in one third more calories than the thinifer. Their perceived intake was very different from the reality.

    Normal range is 18.5 to 25, I think? I know I'm not massive, but I have a very narrow frame, and would be better at 9.5 stone than 10. But as I said, I like eating too much!

    LillyJ, if a woman was 11st 2lbs and 5' 8" tall would her BMI be in the right range?
