Do the bride's parents still pay for weddings? I have no idea.
I think it depends on the parents, and your age etc. I think as we are financially independent and already living together, we would pay. (also because my parents think it is a totally pointless occasion!).
But I know if they did the buffet they would get the food, and would never ask for any money etc.
My best friend recently got married and her Dad paid for it all, but he was never around when she was a kid and is forever showering her with money and not much love!0 -
I know my mother's parents paid for my parents' wedding, but they were younger (my mother was 27, my Dad 25), and very traditional, and also had only 1 daughter (my parents have 3!)
It wasn't an expensive wedding either - my mother made the cake, my Granny made the wedding and bridemaids' dresses, as she was a dressmaker, and my mother, Granny, Nanna, and various great-aunts did the food....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
We would go on a day trip to France and get tons of cheap booze so that all our friends wouldn't have to pay. Fed up of going to weddings recently where the drinks have been £4.50 each.
A friend went to a wedding where the groom was the ultimate MSE. He'd hired a Church Hall and was selling cans of beer he'd bought in France. He was selling the cans and bottles for £2 a time when he'd paid pence for them. He saved money on having a barman by doing the job himself!
Everybody went into town instead of paying his extortionate prices :rotfl:I am a Mortgage Consultant and don't like to be told what I can and can't put in a signature so long as it's legal and truthful.0 -

God this thread has everything.
For the OT. Hmm trying really hard to be sympathetic but I just can't be.Sorry but 3 adults and yet they cannot collectivly pay a mortgage. even with 1 adult off work ill surely they bills could be paid. I fear that this case is more one of living beyond means and spending cash on non-essentials then neglecting bills.
We paid for our wedding ourselves. Cost just under 4k civil ceremony in a hotel with just close family then a large reception for 150. TBH we wanted to do it ourselves. Lived together for a good few years and had one child at the time so we set a date booked everything and then told the parentsI never thought to ask for them to foot the bill. It does help that I make wedding jewellery and tiaras part time so the bridal shop that stock them for me gave me a very good deal on my dress and bridesmaids dresses, I also mnaged to arrange a deal with the florist and cake maker in exchange for some cross promotion.
Weightloss is a touchy subject. For me its not the actual number its the condition of the body. I had a baby 5 weeks ago and whereas i am actually lighter than I was just before conceiving my body has changed shape. Clothes that 10/11 months ago i was comfortable in and looked good in now either don't fit or look shockingly bad. I personally feel unhappy in a 16 when I was a 14 but heavier. I can only hope in the next few weeks I start to tone up more and lose some of the fluid that still appears to be around my legs.MF aim 10th December 2020 :j:eek:MFW 2012 no86 OP 0/20000 -

Cheeky so and so! Serves him right really. Been to lots of so called "posh" dos recently, they have all been boring, and we have all been poorer at the end of it after £4.50 a night. Luckily for me I was driving as they were all in ridiculous locations in golf clubs in the countryside, where no one could afford a taxi to.0 -

5 weeks after having a baby your body is still dealing with the after-effects of pregnancy - you probably still have extra fluid and blood in your body, so don't panic!...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
Just got married 3 weeks ago :P. We paid 1.6k total for the wedding+ restaurant.. 1k for a honeymoon in spain for 2 weeks and 1k spending money on holiday.
I classify the honeymoon and spending money... yearly holiday items... so really wedding cost 1.6k.
We had:
- Mercedes Wedding Car -80 quid
- Wedding Dress from TK Max - 50 quid (really nice one)
- Groom suit - 200 quid
- Groom tie/shirt +best man tie = 50 quid
- Groom Shoes = 40 quid
- Restaurant for 40 people 3 course meal and 300 quid bar tab : approx 1000 quid
- Wedding cake from M+S : 33 quid
- Ceremony: 150 quid at registry office
- Wedding Photographer: 150 quid (he wanted 100 but we gave tip)
- Flowers from local supplier: 50 quid for buttonholex2 and bouqet.
To be honest if you go for a small wedding it can be done 'cheaper' and still be a brilliant day. My wife looked brilliant on the day... After the meal aload of guests went with us to the local barbican and out and about on the town. The photographer was a hobbyist but better than most wedding photographers I've seen... we got 160 photos and loads of artistic type photos.
Use your MSE skills to do a quality wedding cheaper. Cheap doesn't always mean rubbish.
And in the end the wedding cost 1.6k but we got.... 2.3k in gifts (we asked for money) and a 700 quid flat screen tv.
So the wedding paid for itself... and we had money and a tv left over and memories and brilliant photos of the day.
Sorry for OT :O0
