I like the expression "fell into arrears", as though it were an accident. Like tripping up, or stubbing your toe - one minute you can be ambling along in life, and then the next moment - whoops I fell into arrears. After the uprising of the 17th June The Secretary of the Writers Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?0 -
All known forms of contraception have a non-zero failure rate even with perfect usage.
Actually, I think the Virgin Mary is the only known example of celibacy failing as a contraception method........much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

I remember when I was in school we were having sex education lessons, I think I was about 14, I pointed out that you could get pregnant through 'mutual masturbation' as a result of fluid transfer.
'Pardon' said the religious education teacher (who did hear, but obviously didn't want to discuss it).
I repeated myself, 'Pardon' again was the response.
'Never mind', I said.
BTW, there is some debate about the Virgin Mary being a virgin, I believe the original Hebrew can be read not just as 'virgin', so it's not clear that she wasn't knocked up after all.0 -
There is currently a poster on another thread who have an arrangement to pay back debts. They have a NR mortgage with an added £30k - seems like a 125% job. The mortgage is flipping from a deal to SVR and she says they are in trouble.
I took the trouble to read some of her former posts. She is planning a 'pre-Christmas- break with the new puppy - and oh. They have been out and about this year spending money.
They have clearly gone through the £30k in a short time - yet wants sympathy.
What is it 'Queen' says ... 'I want it all, I want it all, I want it all....
But btw, I don't want to have to pay for it!0 -
What astonishes me about this situation is that there are three adults combining resources and yet they cannot afford to survive! Even with one of them becoming sick and then out with pregnancy it's still unbelievable that they cannot manage to pay their way. How on earth did they manage to persuade the banks to lend them the money if they can't provide for themselves? (OK I understand there was easy-credit and now they've got neg-eq but there are THREE of them!).0

Ahem, anyway, back to the point. It does seem that the days of getting together, saving for a house, buying house (with deposit) and then having a family once financially able are long behind us.
The irony is that for the last 10 years, anyone who has tried to save for a deposit has probably found house prices outpacing their savings and therefore ended up worse off as a result.
Be interesting to see whether this credit crunch ushers in a new era of (enforced) financial prudence and planning, and whether it gets forgotten quickly again once things settle down.
I remember the last property crash all too well, and all the cries that banks would never let it happen again by lending imprudently.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
