I buy recycled loo paper, which is a compromise between environmental issues and the fact I like toilet paper.

Sainsbury's revive in the biggest packets is the cheapest loo paper in our local store - with the exception of their basics range, and I find it's very good thick paper and each roll lasts a long time. We get good value for money from a packet.

I can't really picture any alternatives that we'd be willing to use, so I'm happy with recycled as there is an abundance of waste paper for recycling and it avoids chopping down more trees.

T'other thing I have read about is the pouring a stream of water down the relevant area - helping it along with the non-writing hand. That was what Middle Eastern cultures did for centuries after all as I understand it - left hand for cleansing purposes and right hand for eating with (keep the two separate!).

It's what most middle eastern cultures still do. I lived in Turkey for a while, you get used to it pretty easily. The modern thing to use for it is a hand held bidet... looks a bit like a shower head attachment, plugs into your toilet plumbing and is hung at the side. You rinse yourself after everything then.

Some cultures used to use sponges - I gather that includes yer Ancient Romans (having had a quick google)

    I think others used moss.

The Romans used a sponge on a stick, stored in vinegar when not in use (another use for white vinegar..:money: )

we do this. Of course we have toilet roll for visitors and for No. 2's I admit to using toilet roll before using water. Just make sure you wash your hands well afterwards and have good hygiene. Result = minimal toilet roll consumption

I thought these were brilliant when I was on holiday in Turkey, the sewerage system can't cope with loo roll. But I imagine it would make you jump a bit, plumbed to the cold water mains, in winter .

Happy Birthday again Jenni - and hope its a good weekend for you.

Further on the loopaper front - it was another M.S.E. contributor (on another Board I think?) who detailed off how to use less loopaper - as in No 2's equal tearing off a strip of 4 sheets of loopaper and fold in half, use, then fold in half again for use again (that time! - not some subsequent time). That minimises amount used - down from 3 rolls per week to 1 I found.
