Great shop - we've saved a fortune and there's always something worth buying in the weekly specials baskets.
as far as i know aldi's does not accept any type of card
lidl does thoughfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -
When they first opened in this country Aldi did not take cheques or cards, but now they certainly take debit cards. Not sure about credit cards, as I have never tried using one there.0

love aldi and lidl. we only started shopping there when dad told us about the weekly specials. we get their offer email weekly and have slowly but surely tried foodstuff as well. aldi do a fab fresh meat feast pizza with loads of toppings and it's only 99p, mozarella 49p, their version of red bull is £1.66 for 6 cans and is brill. their fabric softner is fab. chicken burgers and southern fired chicken are also great.
lidl do really good value lean steak mince.
we shop at aldi more often as it's closer but they are both great for bargains.
aldi takes debit cards and have started taking visa and mastercard in the last few weeks. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090 -
forgot aldi also do a version of lurpack called norpack which i think is even better. married to the man of my dreams! 9-08-090

Shame- it's very nice, much quieter and cleaner than the Lidl. However, Lidl is nearer to me and for the stuff I want cheaper so I put up with the long queues, inept staff and variable stock levels:rolleyes:.
Anyway, things I regularly buy from Lidl are:
Recycled toilet paper, 10 rolls for £1.25
Lager, cider etc. (when I run out of booze cruise stuff). Also their sherry/vermouth etc.
Mature cheddar (£2.39/500g) very tasty indeed and good value
Mozzarella- 49p in my local, am I being ripped off?
Meat- especially when it's half price
Salami, chorizo etc., all cheap and delicious- I just finished scoffing a 250g one I bought yesterday in fact:D.
Pickled onions 75p or so, they're over a pound in Tesco!
Tinned fish is lovely especially the ones with herbs and spices etc.
Razors- a razor with 20 twin blades is £1.49
Tortellini- much cheaper than Tescos (59p versus £1+ I think).
Tortilla chips (and dips)
....and of course, I regularly snap up some of their weekly specials.
I can't recall a single product that I've bought in Lidl (or Aldi, on the rare occasions that I buy something there) that hasn't been as good as or better than the competing product from Tescos. I just wish it was less of a PITA to shop there:rolleyes:.0 -
Netto's greek style yogurt is scrummy. We also get naan breads there - and they do a lovely platter bread too. Aldi's pasta sauces - the very small jars with olives chillies or tuna or veg in are axcellent as is the carbonara. Lidl's licorace allsorts are wonderful. Their frozen sausages are excellent and the face cream - the stuff in the black tube is very good. The tomato juice is great too. I cant understand why more people dont shop at these shops. I would hate to be a poor snob!!!!!Snootchie Bootchies!0

Lidl's fruit and veg rocks the socks off ASDA and Morrison's and is usually a lot cheaper. Are U getting enough Vitamin D in your life!?0

Sadly we have no Aldi or Lidl near us. My mum used to shop in Aldi alot when we lived in Germany, food was always good. My mum was pleased when Aldi came over here and lucky for her she has one near.0

I often shop at Netto. I buy things like passata, tomato puree and canned beans because they cost so much less there, for example, their cans of Kidney Beans cost 8p each compared to about 40p in Tesco. It is good to go in the run up to Christmas because they tend to stock mincemeat, dried fruit and cake ingredients at a good price.0

this is actually a great time to 'discover' lidl as they're starting to stock all their fantastic christmas stuff. i saw a standard british style christmas cake for about £3ish the other day but what i'm talking about is all the german stuff they sell for the holiday
they've got these small round gingerbread things that are coated in chocolate and taste like they've got a touch of marizapan in them, they're called 'luekerbakin' or something like that... anyway it's the small round ones completely coated in chocolate that you want. the large ones have this weird styrofoamy type bottom that is just nasty and you can''t seem to prise it loose
anyway the small ones (about the same size as a rich tea biscuit, only poofy!) are to die for, i'm going to stock up this year!
their cherry brandy, ameretto and fake baileys are all gorgeous
i like their lime 'bacardi breezer' style drinks and at 75p each you can't beat it!
their cheese straws are very nice and they do bagel crisps which are great with dip (they sell a good combination platter of dip as well)
go on, get your christmas fare there, great time to be a convert! (no i'm not being paid by them to say this :rotfl: )founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0
