TIMES article-shopping at ALDI, NETTO & LIDL

I remember shopping in Aldi in Germany many years ago, before they came here. I hadn't ever been in a shop that just had things still in the boxes, ie not unpacked & stacked on shelves. But the prices were brilliant. So when Aldi first came to this country I was thrilled. Aldi & Lidl are both German, and their own brands are excellent quality. Not too keen on Lidl baked beans, but Aldi's are better than you-know-who (IMHO - but it is a matter of taste of course!)
I have to drive to the nearest large town for both of those shops, so tend to do a big shop once a month, or pop in if we have to go there for any other reason, eg hospital apointments etc.
We have a Netto in our little town, but it does not really compare. It can be cheap, but the quality is not the same. I have gone in there at times for the bargains on the leaflet that comes through the door, but invariably that item is not in stock. I have been in 2 different Nettos, and they are both dirty. Our local one has about 5 tills, but only ever one in use. While the same can sometimes be said about Lidl & Aldi (although they do open more if there is a queue) they somehow seem to get customers through more quickly, I don't know how or why that should be, but it is true!0 -
No there isn't a Lidl in Burnley, just checked on their store locator. Nearest ones are Nelson or Accrington. There is also one in Heywood, Bury so i might have a look there when i go into Bury for the charity shops.

The Lidl in Accrington is pretty good, I always get my ice cream from there.
you can also have a look on the Netto website for their special offers I think it's just https://www.netto.co.uk that tells you what branded stuff is on offer and when. the new store in Burnley doesn't seem to get the offers in as quickly as the Accy branch though.
If you go to Burnley Asda instead of Rawtenstall you can do Aldi and Netto at the same time (well, if you're in a a car) - don't forget to go into town to Home Bargains too!
At home bargains there are those bags like they sell in M&S (black, fabric ones) for about 59p instead of £1.50, top notch.0 -
PennyPincher - Quality of Aldi goods is excellent. A few items I get cheaper at Home Bargains, but not many.
They do seasonal stuff - gardening in summer, cycling stuff, even horse riding stuff at unbeatable prices. It's not all kept in stock, not enough space. You just get in there when it arrives, before its gone. BF got a back pack with many pockets for moby, maps, tools, etc and drinks dispenser, suck while you ride thingy for £14.99 - £49.99 in Halfords...Lovely Olive oil about £1.49, high fruit Jam, all the X-mas stuff is coming in now. The best boxed mince pies I've ever had, forget Sainsburys/Waitrose.
Too many items to try to start to list..and it depends what you want...JUST GET DOWN THERE!!!Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. Look what its grown into!

PP - yep, no probs for wheelchair access, (not in mine anyway) wide aisles too.
Nice thick n creamy yog 19p mature cheddar is nice too. Ordinary orange squash about 39p, High Juice 50% squash 99p, Pineapple is nice (lots more for branded in Tesco) Choc Soya milk 59p, (about 1.50 or £1.70 in Tesco) 3 strawb trifles 99p...£1.50 Tesco. Bio yog drinks, I think 8 for 99p, now. Used to be 1.49, if they go well the price seems to come down. Frozen fish etc good value, and if you having a lazy day the ready meals are good n tasty too. Lasagne, cottage pie, Roast Beef meal etc. Smoked salmon £1.99, nice choice of salami/cooked meats etc. They had a yummy fish pie that was a whole slab of fish with a creamy topping not just white sauce with 3 lumps of fish in - but not seen that lately.
Maybe doesn't beat Lidl on everything, they are in direct competition - but worth looking for different items not in Lidl. HTH.Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. Look what its grown into!

I love them both but we don't have a Netto here. I used them all the time when I lived in Germany and cheered when they came over here. I'm not overly impressed with the Aldi dishwasher tablets. I must try the Lidl ones instead but everything else is great.Organised people are just too lazy to look for things
