I must check them out. I love my ham and cheese. I have all 3 within a driving distance of me.

LOL! Having had a busy day (and a late finish, thanks to debrief session in pub with boss's boss about best way of tackling my nightmare boss) I didn't get around to reading the article until I was on the train home. When I read it I was really surprised there had been no mention of it on this forum yet!
I have a local Lidl, where I go all the time. Favourite bargains there are their butterbeans (22p), fusilli (49p per kilo when reduced), mozzarella (49p) and the range of interesting fruit schnapps and liqueurs they currently have! There's a clearance day on non-food goods this Saturday, they're advertising up to 70% off. Also agree about the olive oil - there are two or three different brands there, but the one I have was really cheap and is lovely.
Also have a Netto slightly further away, but I don't go there much. Nearest Aldi is where I used to live, in Catford (6 miles away) and I don't have a car. Never shopped there (wasn't an OS-er at the time!)Operation Get in Shape

There is also an Aldi in Thamesmead but its probably just as problematic to get to without a car.0 -
Love ALDI, my tip is - subscribe to thier email message and you get a great email, with pics and details of all the specials they have coming in the following week.

They really do have a fantastic range of their own products, which give the big names a run for thier money. Food and cleaning, gardening, electricals and household stuff, casual clothes and sporting goods. I don't think I've ever not liked ANYTHING I've tried.
Sitting here with my 17" TFT monitor, it was £130 new Aldi....have bought three DVD players for X-mas pressies. £22 each - they play the photo cd's, and rewritables, etc etc etc, where other cheapie ones don't. No problem with returns with receipts.
The snobby shoppers are paying for their foolish thinking, while we enjoy gourmet treats from Aldi, at much lower prices. See the TV adverts!!
I've shopped with them since they arrived and over the years they have got better and better. They don't take credit cards tho. So you need debit card, cash, cheque. With the new Egg money card working as a debit card you should be able to use it and clock up spending points there, but I've not tried this yet.
They don't have a loyalty scheme, but the prices do that for them anyway, in keeping and improving market share, while the shoppers rewards are already credited to you when you get the bill.
I think we should turn the tables and be snobby about shopping at Aldi, all go into smug mode with all the savings we make.
The Times recommends eh?? good enough no? hehe... :rotfl:
I don't get everything from Aldi, but can highly recommed it. You will be pleasantly suprised, if you've not tried it.
I've not been into Netto, mainly because I so happy with Aldi.
I think there is a Lidl, a bit further away, have only heard good reports, so must get around to trying there too. :drool:Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. Look what its grown into!

Oh yeh, better mention for the uninitiated - you need to take your own bags - should be re-cycling these anyway, or buy a big re-useable trolley bag to load into. You can buy bags, (to put you off, which is no bad thing) or pick up empy boxes in there.
You need a £1 coin or token for a trolley, and you need to go to the loo/change baby before setting out!Bless Martin's Little Cotton Socks. I thank him for giving us MSE. Look what its grown into!

Hi
We have a Lidl about a 1min drive away. I dont buy my whole weeks shop there but do buy regularly: thick cut smoked ham (6slices 89p), jams-yummy, frozen fish, fruit and veg if on offer, mozarella (44p does 2 pizzas), milk, mini magnum type lollies (12 for £1.99), yogurts.
What kind of offers do Aldi's do? Their quality of items/best value etc? Never shopped there and we do have one about 15mins away.

whole salami for about 2.50,
.
see i knew i'd miss a few things
the black forest ham is gorgeous and is £1.29 i believe, really nice
the salami has actually gone up a lot, used to be £1.79 but is now £2.39 but still a good bargain for 600g of quality salami
their sundried tomatoes packed in olive oil are only £1.59 per jar. i use the tomatoes then save the oil to cook with
they also do pickled red peppers for £1.79 (i think, might be cheaper) you get 5-6 whole really big red peppers. very tasty
they've started selling huge jars of green olives for £1.29 i believe and they also sell pickled onions, pickled italian veg cheap perfect place to get your holiday nibbles!
don't miss their german christmas special products they're so tasty!founder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -

lidl sells heavy duty large shopping bags for 99p each (course if you're in sainsburys you can get them for 75p then take them to lidl!)
these are those waterproof type, really big and they take a beating.
as for the shopping trolleys... as long as they are the type where you just push a coin in the front you can use a penny or a 20p coin... if it's the type that the co-op have with the special plastic bit shaped for a one pound coin that won't work. my lidl just has the flat ones so i shove whatever coin in i find first, usually a pennyfounder of Frugal Genius UK (Yahoo Groups)0 -

Hello Again
Forgot to mention the olive oil in Lidls is great value. Also my OH luvvsss the Tirimisu's 2 for 79p, and sometimes get the cheddar if run out of SP cheeseAlso, sometimes get the cheapie beans, spagetti, rice, pasta, but do normally get these in my 3 weekly shop from Asda to bulk out my £50 to qualify for the £10 voucher off
Next week Lidls have snow boots for £4.99, so want to get DD & I a pair each
We have a Nettos very near but rarely go there. If they have Heinz beans on special for 19p each, get OH to buy about 15 tins as I do prefer these on toast but do use cheapie beans elsewhere in cooking and have been known to have them on toast  My SIL lives just round the corner from Nettos and she doesnt have alot of money-well none really-her OH keeps it all and she has to use pennies etc to get things she needs-but thats a whole other story..lol. She has a budget of around £3 a day to feed 5 adults and she does this most days or buys offers so next day she only needs a a couple of bits. Nettos is her life saver! I have managed to help her cut back further and is now able to serve up roast, bangers & mash, chillis, currys, spag bol, shepards pie etc for less than her £3 a day. They do have a lot of debt and this is priority debt to council....alot....so they do have to be careful, but Nettos has helped them eat better.
