At the risk of being laughed out of court - how do I make sure their software has been properly removed? O/H thinks he removed it or tried to, but isn't 100% sure it's been fully removed.

You will not fully remove AOL software unless you use a tool to do it. Simply using Add/Remove programs will not do it. PC Decrapifier
here will easily remove AOL from your machine.

Btw O/H spoke to aol tonight. They said the laptop doesn't have an IP number, or the operating system doesn't think it has an IP number, and we should take the laptop back to the shop it was bought from so they can/will sort it out.

Absolute rubbish advice from 'AOL support'! When you have fully removed the AOL software from your laptop, just connect to the router as you have successfully done previously.

Basically check add/ remove software in control panel if XP. Make sure any mention of aol is gone.
    Done
Then go into control panel, network connection, right click on the icon for your wireless connection device and choose properties.
On the front screen that appears you should have a list, scroll it down and look for Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Click on it to turn it blue then click on the properties button under it.In the resulting screen check to see if "Obtain an IP automatically" is selected. If it isn't, tick it. Do the same with "Obtain DNS automatically".Click OK on both pages to save the changes if you make any.
Both ''obtain an IP address automatically'' & ''obtain DNS server server address automatically'' were already ticked - still are.
If you are not running xp or that does not sort it post back.
I'm on XP. It's still saying ''limited or no connectivity'' though.

Btw Paul, thank you very much for taking this time with me :o

Limited or no connectivity is usually due to an incorrect encryption key. The wireless can be connected with good signal strength but if the encryption key is incorrect, no data will pass over the link and therefore no IP will be received from the router.

Log into the router, go to the wireless settings page and enter a new long random WPA passphrase from here. Save this to a notepad file, so that you can copy & paste it into your laptop when prompted.

Well I'm getting nowhere and starting to lose the will to live.

I've been on the desktop. It says his netgear router is working. The SSID is NETGEAR. Can't see any WEP. He;s told me the password he used when setting it up.

I think the problems still on the laptop. But I still don't know how/where to resolve it.

Ok, if you go into control panel, network connections and double click on the icon for your wireless connection device what happens?
If it doesn't give a list and just tries and fails to connect right click on the wireless icon, choose properties and if there are 3 tabs up the top of the screen that comes up click on the middle tab. On this tab clear all the networks listed in the "preferred networks" box. Click OK to close that screen and try double clicking the wireless connection icon again. It should give you a screen with the list of networks in your area, one will match the SSID of your netgear router (you may want to change that name to somethign a bit more unique as there may be more routers called netgear near you). Click on the listing for your SSID and click connect. It should then ask for the key, put your caps lock on and type it in.

    I get :
    Wireless Network Connection
    Limited or no connectivity
    Intel(R)PRO/Wireless 22008G...

If it doesn't give a list and just tries and fails to connect right click on the wireless icon, choose properties and if there are 3 tabs up the top of the screen that comes up click on the middle tab. Did the above - I have 3 tabs at the top.

    Association tab:
Network name (SSID) - NETGEAR ( greyed out, can't change )
Wireless network key in blue - title
This network requires a key for the following
Network Authentication : Box with drop down menu for Open, Shared, WPA, WPA-PSK
Data encrtption : Box with drop down menu for Disabled or WEP
    Network Key :
    Confirm Network Key :
This section was set to Authentication - Open & encryption - Disabled. If I leave this as it is the network key bits are greyed out ie can't use. If I play with the Authentication & encryption, it allows me in input a network key.
Where do I get the network key from ?
    Authentication tab :
    All greyed out.
Message at bottom - IEEE 802 1* authentication can not operate on peer to peer (ad hoc) networks or on networks for which data encryption is disabled
    Connection tab :
Automatic connection ticked - whenever this network is in range

    I'm getting a numb brain !

You are making a real meal of this! What is the model number of your Netgear router? (In post #1 you said it was BT wireless kit!)

You or your OH have obviously not set up the router correctly, if the SSID still says NETGEAR, so you basically need to set up the wireless again properly, rather than poking and hoping!

All you need to do is log into the router while connected using an Ethernet cable. Change the SSID to a unique name e.g. Somerset99. Enter a passphrase into the WPA field as per post #15. Search for your new SSID and paste in the passphrase when prompted. Easy two minute job, all explained in the Netgear user manual.

If you are using XP then
1.Right-click the wireless network icon in the lower right corner of your screen, and then click View Available Wireless Networks.

2.The Wireless Network Connection window appears and displays your wireless network listed with the SSID(this will probably say netgear) you chose. If you don't see your network, click Refresh network list in the upper left corner. Click your network, and then click Connect in the lower right corner

3.Windows XP prompts you to enter a key. Type the encryption key that you wrote down earlier in both the Network key and Confirm network key boxes, and then click Connect
The encryption key will be the password that your O/H gave you type it in and click connect.

if you are using vista then it is virtually the same

Ok, apologies to everyone - this must be getting boring.

The router has been redone. O/H set it up before on the desktop. Maybe he did it wrong, I don't know. It failed this morning so he's done it again, btw it's a Netgear Wireless-G Network Starter Kit DGB111G.

The point is, my laptop is now showing 'connected' when it spots the Netgear. So that is solved.

I know I'm a dork - but how do I use the wireless connection to access my account at aol ? Previously, when it was working, I would click the aol button, go into 'my' account details ( user name, password ), click connect and enter aol homepage. Now, because I've deleted all the aol settings & software, that button is gone. So now I've got a wireless connection, but how do I use that to access aol ??

Sorry this has gone on so long.
