O/H killed my internet

I'm on dial-up with aol. Been having problems for over a month. O/H had problems with his aol broadband as well so he bought & installed a BT wireless network kit. He was sorted, and I was able to access aol on my account too - my laptop saw wireless available, signal strength excellent, said do you want to use it, and bingo.
I posted here about aol deals and was told that since I was accessing aol via wireless I could effectively use O/H's broadband. Ok - I asked O/H to install broadband on my laptop, he used the aol disks he had. No good - it came up with the aol screen, choice existing user & guest, but neither went anywhere. I had asked him to set up the broadband alongside my dial-up (in case !! ) but there was only broadband there - all previous buttons gone. So he took broadband off, and I again had my old button, leading to screen sign-in showing my user name. All good - no.
The wireless is gone ! It's still there, saying signal strength excellent but I can't use it because ''status:limited or no connectivity''. When I ask for more information or try to 'repair' it doesn't recognise the IP address and says it's a network problem. Been talking to aol for hours and they've said plug in the wireless to my laptop and they'll take it from there. I'll ask my O/H to do this tonight because he has all the passwords, serial numbers etc when he first installed it on his desktop ( was passed between aol & netgear ).
I don't understand what's going on - before my laptop just saw a wireless connection and used it ! Now it seems the laptop/or router has to be configured, my IP address has to be set-up somewhere ?? I don't understand why it's not just like it was before ?

Why didn't you leave it like that?

First mistake! You do not need to install the crapy AOL software on any machine to use their service! AOL are your ISP but you don't need to use their software, your router connects and stays connected.

So why did you have to mess with it? Your laptop was connecting to the router and the router connects to the ISP.

Why did you touch it, there was no need to install AOL broadband on you laptop, it was already connected to broadband via the router and everything was working.
If you don't understand what you are doing don't try and change things you know nothing about. :rolleyes:0 -
uninstall and destroy the disks to aol its is the worst bb provider ever
your accessing it wirelessly you do not need the software

Thanks for the help - not.
Edit - that wasn't for you robpw2. We posted simoultaneously.0 -
If you installed their software you may find it has now manually assigned you an IP that is conflicting. Do as above and remove the software, if it still doesn't work post back and someone will help you check that windows has put it back to auto assign.0

I am sorry but you were already advised in this thread that you did not need to do anything further as you were already connected.

There is no point in helping if you ignore what you are told.0 -

Ok, I messed up and didn't understand what was being said - I admit that obviously.
What I was asking and couldn't understand on that thread - was if I cancelled my dial-up account - there was then no access to aol on the laptop, as there was no other account on it. I was broadband connected to my account but I was trying to get rid of my account and use O/H's.
But ultimately it doesn't matter how badly I messed up, it's me that's currently stuffed internet-wise.0 -

At the risk of being laughed out of court - how do I make sure their software has been properly removed? O/H thinks he removed it or tried to, but isn't 100% sure it's been fully removed.
Btw O/H spoke to aol tonight. They said the laptop doesn't have an IP number, or the operating system doesn't think it has an IP number, and we should take the laptop back to the shop it was bought from so they can/will sort it out.0 -
Thats AOL tech support BS. Basically check add/ remove software in control panel if XP. Make sure any mention of aol is gone. Then go into control panel, network connection, right click on the icon for your wireless connection device and choose properties.
On the front screen that appears you should have a list, scroll it down and look for Internet Protocol TCP/IP. Click on it to turn it blue then click on the properties button under it.
In the resulting screen check to see if "Obtain an IP automatically" is selected. If it isn't, tick it. Do the same with "Obtain DNS automatically".
Click OK on both pages to save the changes if you make any.
If you are not running xp or that does not sort it post back.
If you get shot of the dial up account then you will just be running off the wireless, instead of dialling out you just connect to the router, the router itself is always connected to the internet so you just connect to the router and the router acts as your gateway to the internet.0
