Kimberley. That works fine until your pet is run over and needs a £4,000 operation and ongoing medicine costs. So self insure, but only if you're willing to make hard choices about either finding the money or putting your pet down. In our case I might have been willing to make that choice if it came up, but my partner would not so we had to insure.
The only way a pet would be run over is if your garden wasn't secure enough and it got out or you walk the dog off the lead or maybe if the front door was opened and the dog got out, none of those things will happen with me. If the dog was very poorly and i had no insurance then yes i'd have to PTS. Maybe once my debts are paid off i could afford insurance, but many people can't.
Bromley86, you live in Bromley? I'm near there0 -
Thanks for your help everyone - it's a minefield isn't it? Comparing each insurers individual policy is surely a cure for insomnia!
There seems to be lots of 'benefits' that I don't really want/need. I want the vet bills and the public liability bits of the policy!"No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
I just have!
Do you recommend them?0 -
I have our hounds insured with them (albeit it younger ages - 6 years old) - only time we've claimed it was handled nice and quickly. So yes I'd say so.0

Thanks Andy, it is a quite a bit more expensive, paying £10 odd now Petplan want £17 odd. But AFI just is a nightmare.0

With petplan, check the excess - my dogs just hit 10, and admittedly I've had to put in a lot of claims for ongoing conditions, but with older dogs, as well as the excess ( mine is £105 per condition), you also have to pay 20% of the fees over and above the excess.
I've always found petplan a good company if you have to claim, and my excess is probably due to the number of claims, but in the blurb they've just send, I think it says the extra 20% is standard for all older dogs. Might be worth checking out.All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0 -
I know Halifax insure older dogs. So far with our puppy they've been fine.
I haven't seen anything about a % excess with Halifax.
In what way is AFI a nightmare? Is it the 35% or are you having trouble claiming because of the E&L underwriters?0
