Pet Plan (and most other insurance companies) wont accept new business from any pet over the age of 8 and some breeds even younger. That is because they are too high a risk of making a claim and they wont get several years of premiums in before the claims are likely to start arriving. More Than didn't have an upper age limit last year so worth a check. Can't think of any others of the top of my head but I am sure there is one other company. You will pay more and have a higher excess though.

TOP TIP - get the insurance started before they get to 8

Petplan has given me a quote and my dog is nearly 10?
She has been mostly healthy, she has had 2 ops for benign lumps, and pyometra which she cant get again anyway so I think I may change. She does'nt have any ongoing illnessess.

Check to see if it was for their non-lifetime policy as that's not age limited.

Am wondering if I should change my pet insurance.
Currently, for myyoung cat, I pay £5 per month with Tesco. £50 excess and £2500 per condition, per year.
HSBC have offered me, for just under £9 per month, lifetime cover, no limits per condition/year, plus £7500 in vet fees paid. Haven't seen excess or full T&C's(waiting for Mum to download & print at work).
    What have other MSE's got?

I went with Petplan. they seemed to cover everyhting i needed for my dog with the least restrictions. I am paying for the platinum cover and it is a bit more but it seems a better deal to me. I was with E&L, My advice... Don't touch em with a barge pole. The ammount of restrictions they put on their cover makes it virtualy useless. Fortunatly I am still in the 14 day cooling off period so I cancelled it this morning.
I Reject your reality and substitute my own.

When life gives you lemons, throw em back and say you want CASH instead!

Get out whilst you can as you've signed up for something that isn't what you think. That Tesco is £2,500 per condition for the first 12 months. After that you pay for any bills that can be associated with that condition.

That HSBC policy looks pretty good. Try PetPlan, AXA, Halifax, NFU (phone only) - the amounts covered vary, but they're all pretty high.
  • My collie is 11 & I've got her insured with Healthy Pets. Don't know how good their claim procedure is though coz I've never had to make one, thank goodness.

Just went to their site and got a quote for my 3 dogs....

10yrold male Staffie, 5yrold female staffie, and 6mth old male Doberman...

I took out Bronze cover ..only £30.62/mth for all 3 :j:j:j and excess only £50 too:T:T

    Very impressed!!

Healthy Pets is a lifetime policy, but the limit doesn't renew each year. So with Bronze you can only claim £1000 per condition.

Looked at the HSBC t&c's and am happy so will take out a policywith them. The excess is £75, but % of cover wise is better than Tesco!
  • Do you really need pet insurance? In the long run it will almost certainly cost you more than pay as you go. After all the insurance company has to make a profit and the government takes its slice through insurance tax. We have 8 cats at the moment, all incoming strays. Could not possible afford to insure them all.
