Hi, just wondering if anyone has any ideas? we would need to take out pet insurnace today. thanks x
  • Hi, So sorry to hear about your poor kitty.

I am a vet nurse and insurance adviser and have to say this doesn't look good for you. As far as I am aware NO companies will cover you for an existing condition. Most also have a 2 week - 1 month period when you first take out the policy where they will not cover for anything (at least not illness - some cover accidents).

I would still take out cover - as you've seen, these things are costly but hopefully if correctly diagnosed, epilepsy or whatever it is, can be controlled quite cheaply! At least if you have anything else in the future (fingers crossed you don't) you know you can give any treatment the go-ahead. The other options don't bear thinking about.

There is another tread going about insurance - have a good read thru and try to get 'Cover for life'. I really hope you find out whats going on and get it under control. Patience is what you need at the moment...:A
  • Yeah, sorry - but insurance companies want to make money out of you, and if they covered an existing illness they would have to charge premiums so high that they would not be worthwhile.

For example, if they gave you a policy for £10 a month but had to splash out £200 to pay vet's bills in the first month, there's nothing to stop you cancelling the policy and walking off with an effective profit.

Insurance is all about gambling where the company can see exactly what cards you've got on the table. In this case, they will see that they can't win.

Hope kitty gets better though, that's the main thing!

    Hi all
I had my 3 Dobermanns insured last year with M&S age of dogs 6, 4 and 16 mths paid insurance with an extra £5 on each policy so had no excess to pay paid per month £35 in total for all dogs , no dogs to the vets and all are well so I was gobsmacked to say the least when this year it jumped to over £90 a month after checking out the cost is £48. for one dog and £25 each for the other 2 , other insurance are just as costly
    they are AXA's

hmmm, interesting you should say that. I've just had my renewal for cats through on M&S (no claims in the previous year or, indeed, ever) and was quite horrified to see the increase - it equates to 80% increase on last year's premiums.

What the heck are M&S playing at
  • I have my year old dog insured with E & L for about 8 months now.Can i cancel midway through the policy. any advise before i ring them incase they bombard me with incorrect info on it. After reading this i will go with a more reputable company.
  • Just had to put a claim in to M & S for my 2year old cat that was shot last week. Vet bill up to now £612.
She will need another op in 6-8 weeks time to remove the screw in her elbow so that will need another claim.
Wonder how much my premiums will go up by next year????Dreading that one.

  • When getting pet insurance, do check that it covers conditions for life, and not just for the period of cover.

Some insurances are cheaper but count each year as a new contract, so if your pet goes down with a chronic condition, you are stuffed after the first year, coz then no-one else will insure the animal for that condition either.

I am with M&S (well, that is to say my boy is!). I am not too worried about the excess because I am really concerned to insure him for big expenses such as a bad accident or him going down with diabetes or something.

I *think* petplan also has lifetime cover.
