I've never heard of them, and I can't find much information on their site. Who underwrites it?

I'd be interested to hear your experiences of them though.
When I had my loft converted back into a loft, the neighbours came around and scoffed, and called me retro.

NFU are very popular - i know lots of people who insure their horses/dogs/cars through them. They're a very reputable company. Premiums can be a bit pricey but I'd certainly put them up there with Petplan with regards to service and claim settlements.

never heard of this one so will watch your thread with interest.

I was just about to sign up with M&S- half the cost of petplan and more cover...

We've just signed up with M&S.........we had the option to pay about an extra £1 per month which waives any excess.

Any advice that you receive from me is worth exactly what you paid for it. Not a penny more or a penny less.

    Jenny,

Thank you very much for that. I also had heard very little of them & i asked my vet who said it was a long time since they had dealt with NFU union but if the premiems are good & they guarantee lifetime cover then why not try them?

I have done hours & hours of research myself but never seem to find many reviews on them, all i can say is that the bits i did read gave glowing reports about them. I forget who underwrites them but when i spoke to the underwriters they were really helpful - they called me back and answered all my questions & guaranteed permenant healthcare, so i signed up.

They have undercut M&S by over half - M& S wanted £63 a month to insure me, but NFU union wanted just under £24 as long as i agreed to microchip my puppy & they cover £4000 per condition, per year for life, they don't just treat conditions for 12 months or until you spend £4000 on each condition. There's an excess of £40 but i can easily afford the first £40.

It all sounded too good to be true, but they really have been so helpful. I just wish i could find more write ups about them.

  • The also insure houses with thatched roofs that people like Direct Line will not touch. They are very good if not widely used. Something to be aware of is that a typical farmer will not be rushing to the vet everytime an animal sneezes so they will not be claiming for anything trivial. For example if you have an animal with an upset stomach (or yourself come to that) you give it nothing but water for a day and then a light diet for the next few days. A farmer would not have time to wait around for a vet to come and tell him something which to him is obvious. In addition a farmer ahs access to shops that sell medicines that everyone else has to have a prescrption for.

Relay can you provide a link to the NFU insurance that you are taking out. We have a puppy that we were thinking of insuring so we would be really interested and what you have found. The puppy is to be chipped when she is spade in a few months time.

We were considering M&S too as it was recommend by a few people on this site.

I only know about them through the horsey world. If you went to any horse chat forum, they are one of the top companies used :D

Have you received any policy papers? I would be interested in who does the underwriting. Some of the premiums you quoted were unbelievable - what kind of puppy do you have? The only one I can think of at the moment which could demand such high premiums would be a pedigree Burnese Mountain Dog which, unfortunately, are subject to cancer at a very early age.
