My PetPlan renewal went to over £10 a month for my 9 yr old cat with £4000 cover , i renewed with Lloyds for £5.80 a month but realised it would only cover for 12 months.

I have just taken out a policy with the Halifax for £5.20 a month and has £6000 cover which is ongoing and £10 cashback from Rpoints and the excess is only £50 where PetPlan was £85 + 20% of each claim and Lloyds was £65 + 10%.

There was an even cheaper option for £3.50 a month but only had £1000 cover, it seems very reasonable for a older aged pet.

yes I agree with you the cost is almost the same you are saying.
  • its totally upto you that you want pet insurance or not, but I like to do so
  • Thanks. In the summary list it says that 'Dental treatment due to injury or illness is covered'.

Their letter says they cannot help because there has been more than 12 months between dental checks.

Does it say that in the small print? Cats are notorious for having teeth and gum problems. Can they define illness?

Has anyone used Admiral for pet insurance? They seem to have a good level of cover at a reasonable price but are underwritten by the Ultimate Insurance Company, whom I have never heard of. Any feedback would be appreciated.

Lou I am asking the same as you. I have just got a quote from AXA for an Old English Sheepdog puppy £377.51 (£100 excess) and for Platinum cover from Argos the £7,000 per year - £246.54 (£65 excess) quite a big saving. Pet Plan I would need a second mortgage for. Any info / advice regarding Argos Pet Insurance would be really great.

Did a lot of online searches for customer satisfaction and Argos came out very well so I went for it. Ticks all the boxes for price and cover and limits etc (the Platinum one I mean - the rest look so-so) and seems to offer what others charge about a £100 a year more for. Haven't had to put it to the test yet and fingers crossed that'll be along time coming. You might want to investigate Virgin too.

  • We are seriously wondering whether to cancel all or some of our insurances, having always insured our animals. Our premiums cost (now, with two having renewed) us £276 per month which we can ill afford. Of that, £130 is for one nearly-11-year-old dog and we have always thought that the day we cancel, she will needs thousands of pounds of treatment, she has always been sickly, having had a couple of £3k operations in her life and about £3-4k worth of treatment over the past two years. But we have worked out that over the past two years, we have incurred £13k worth of vet bills, but £5k of that was for fancy root canal treatment on one tooth which realistically would have been removed if we hadn't had insurance. So, removing that from the equation, we've incurred £8k worth of treatment but have paid over £6k in premiums plus excesses with some (including the 11-year-old) falling into the 20% bracket, so there isn't much in it but right now we are really struggling with the premiums. Unfortunately, there is no PDSA near to us either. Difficult to know what to do....

zagubov, like you I have been going through nearly every Pet Insurance there is and Argos Plantinum does seem to come out very well and the price is great compared to very similar cover. Virgin doesn`t offer the ongoing cover that the Argos Platinum does (as long as you review). For similar`ish coveer Pet Plan wanted another £350+ a year more (ok I know they are good and many use them but I`m imagining what they may go upto in a few years and that does scare me!) Both insurances know its an Old English Sheepdog but Pet Plan put him in a `special box` because of his breed.

So Argos its going to be. Lets hope we never have to put it to the test.

    Hello,

can anyone recommend an insurer for an older cat?

Walter came to live with us after his owners, my partner's parents, moved abroad.

He's around 14, neutered, and is a Siamese cross - partner's mam says he was bought from a Siamese breeder and his sister (RIP) was seal-point, but Walter is about two stone of muscle with blonde fur, which doesn't look very Siamese to me.

He doesn't have any health problems apart from chronic laziness but I've found some insurers won't cover a cat of his age.

    thanks.

I inially had my older cat insured with M&S for about £20 a month but then the policy shot up. I moved the policy to Healthy Pets http://www.healthy-pets.co.uk/ with thier gold cover. He had no health problems at the time and I had him plus my other kitty (under 6yrs) insured for less than £20 a month. In his final year, Big G did develop Feline CRF where I made some claims for inital tests and treatment, they also covered his prescription diet (which wasn't cheap.) I would deff recommend them, were always quick to pay up with no quibble.

my 10yrs old dog went from £15pm to £65pm soon as he hit 10...daylight robbery...also m&s...he got diabetic three months after we stopped the payments..and are now spending about £60pm of bills...oh dear
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Why do you feel the need to insure your cat? I wouldn't insure any other cat I get in the future. It did not make any sense whatsoever.Just put some money aside every month to cover any eventual vet bills. I cancelled the only insurance I ever had for any of my cats, after finding it climbed to a ridiculously high level and when I did make two claims, for an abcess, I still had to pay a £75 excess. Keep him in at night as that is the time they are most likely to get into accidents.

    WRONG..

insurance is very important for your pet anything can go wrong there are alot of different illness cats can develop even an indoor cat is not safe now regarding the excess fee you should only make a claim when it comes to a big vet bill however if the vet bill is under £70 I normaly just pay for it out of my pocket it doesn't worth the claim as the excess fee is more then the vet bill
