August 2010 renewal comes in at ...wait for it ...£746.67 per year !!! was paying £29 a month now they want £62.22 a month excess has also increased from £60 to £75 and because one dog is over 5 years old they want £75 PLUS 25% of the claim!!

perhaps they are not so great after all ?

Same thing happened to me about 2 years ago so I self insured. However I can (and will) pay for any event, unfortunately insurance is a must for those that could not afford to pay for a worse case scenario

I had exactly the same thing when I had my renewal from Healthy Pets a couple of months ago (and others on a dog forum I'm a member of did too - apparently some of their premiums went up by 200%). My premium for two dogs went from £35 to £70 per month. I switched to AXA, which is a better policy, with a premium of £29 per month. Hethmar is correct - Healthy Pets is not a covered for life policy.

200% - thats awful. I mean they are probably condemning some animals to an early pts if people cant afford to continue paying the premiums.
  • Are they allowed to do this? Ive been with healthy pets for quite a few years now and always found them to be good renewal due in nov and as i have had a few claims am not looking forward to this.
One dog is quite old with some probs so I dont think I would be able to change him to another insurance. Surely they cant just do this to existing customers? They ill go out of bussiness if everyone goes elsewhere.

Trouble is, yes they can do it :( And what will happen is that the ones who leave will probably be those who have healthy pets and are therefore able to get cover elsewhere, leaving the ones with ongoing conditions having to stay with the company which in turn means more claims and increased premiums :(
  • Will be looking elsewhere for young dog then, cant afford not to insure but it will be difficult for the old boy.

AXA seems about the most stable insurers (hopefully). NFU also seem to be genuine. But wait til you get the quote, it may not be as bad as you imagine. A lot of us got caught with M and S like this. Their policy was wonderful, no excess either and then a few years later, doubled premiums and an excess applied. Im stuck with them with one of mine as he has an ongoing chronic condition.

We have just bought a new puppy and also have a 9 year old GSD (no claims though). I checked over the 'net for prices and found a policy by Equine & Livestock was the best price through a broker. We are now paying less for the 2 dogs less than £18pm) than we were for the 1!! It did include a 10% discount for being a new customer and another 10% for a web application, so we wait and see about next year.

Someone I know said they had terrible problems when claiming from that company, how true it is I don't know.

Previously I would have recommended Halifax as they didn't impose a percentage excess when your animals hits a certain age, but they do now for new policies. Their policy is good in other ways though - for instance, they cover prescription diets which is very handy when you have an animal which needs a renal diet - More Than don't cover this, for example.
