NN I would have a look at AXA. Some policies have upper age limits. Think the only way you can find out is by enquiring.

Thanks - the AXA policy look promising and in case anyone else is interested, I found a list of policies here that have no upper age restriction for older dogs. Looks like we will be changing our policy. :)

We have a 1 yr old Old English Sheepdog who we insured through pet-insurance.co.uk when we first got him. We went with them because at the time they were one of the only companies offering a lifetime policy for a decent price. Since then, he has had problems with his eye which we have found out is due to an allergy to washing powder (weird, I know!). At the time of treatment. the vet advised us that the insurance policy that he had wasn't very good and that they sometime have problems paying out. She also said that if we had to see a specialist, it's ulikely that they would deal direct with our company.

She advised us to change insurance company, however if we change I don't think his eye would be covered. Does anyone know any way round this? His eye problem is related to an allergy which is now under control. Would this make any difference?

We have just got a puppy and would like to insure them at the same place, however we see little point in adding him to our existing insurance policy if it is indeed useless!!

    Please help!!

A lot of policies are bringing in this percentage of claim amount payable. And a lot have a finite amount of money to claim for each condition. £150 excess is a lot! I think most of the insurance policies out there have been reported on in this thread. However that doesn't stop the companies from changing the terms and conditions so what could be a good policy one year could turn out to be a real disappointment the next year. NFU seems to be a good example of that. Marks and Spencer is another.

I thought £150 was a lot, especially with 25% as well! Every policy I've checked today appears to offer a better deal than the one we've got now.

I'm with M&S and renewal just came through. It's gone up from £17 to £27 a month. I called up to query and updated my address. They said they'd reprice it and it's actually gone up to £30.

My dog is a mixed breed just over 2 years old. In the first year there were two claims (one for each eye). They could have been done together which would have said them money but M&S refused the vet's medical recommendation to take preventative treatment on the second eye whilst operating on the first eye. The second eye needed treating just two months after the first eye.
In the second year they tried to put the cost up but I called and explained that she was a mixed not a cross breed and the premium was reduced (just a little bit more than the first year).
Then this year the cost has gone up with no new claims.

I wouldn't mind but it's probably unlikely that she'll have the same eye problem but M&S said any eye problem probably wouldn't be covered by a new insurer. It's seems a big risk to go with a new insurer even though it would cost half the premium M&S have quoted.

Very frustrating. You think insurers would consider having a policy which after 12 or 24 months with no symptoms, they would cover previous conditions (even if at a reduced rate).
  • I posted a thread for M&S insurance last year to warn people of their ploys. They advertise for life insurance but then they take whatever premiums they feel like once you have an older animal. When they doubled our premium in a year in which we had never claimed we should have changed but when your pet is older they know you dont have much choice.
I have added the original thread below

I read all the problems with pet insurance. would like to warn against M&S insurance - which they said was for life. Our premium went up from £16 to £35 a month this year and on top of the excess we had to pay 35% of the claim. Our dog was 14 this year so it would be difficult to go elsewhere. She got very poorly and had to be put to sleep last month and when we received the cheque they deducted 7 months premium from the pay out, so they make you carry on paying the insurance when your pet is dead. I rang to question this but they said it was in the small print and they only deducted it because we had made a claim. At a time when the family is devastated by the loss of their pet, this company no how to cash in. Please think twice before choosing.
  • I must look out how much our pet insurance is at the moment - I suspect the large increase in the amount is what caught my eye this time. I had our dog vaccinated at a Pet Vaccinate Clinic yesterday and picked up a leaflet for insurance from the PDSA. PDSA = for those on a low budget? No, £39.21 - more expensive than my current insurance (£34.74)!

So far I'm looking at AXA @ £26.50 and ASDA @ £20.95...still reading everything very carefully though.
  • where do i stand on cancelling my tesco pet insurance? cant find any info on the website. thing is i moved house and because my pet insurance is direct debit every month i didnt give it a second thought they would have my old address. they must have sent a review letter to that address and this month i have been charged £5 more each month. i went on to find a new quote and it quoted £9, but this month i have paid £15.....why would it have gone up? i havent claimed at all this yr, my dog is now 17mths old.
i can find it cheaper elsewhere and its only because the letter went to my old address that i didnt cancel it.

    any help appreciated!!!
