if it was me i would choose AXA, thinking in the long term that AXA do not charge a % of vets fees on top of the excess once a pet gets elderley. petplan charge 20% of the vets fees. i made a claim last year for almost £5000 with Petplan, but I had to pay £110 excess plus 20% of the £5000 too

you also seem to get more for your money with axa, when compared to the Budget policy costing almost the same with petplan. it's a hard one trying to predict how much cover you need...years passed when i didn't claim a thing with petplan, but then over two years i claimed £7000 then £5000 (cat had cancer and the care was costly and ongoing).

i would not even look at the Petplan value plan as I believe it is not a 'for life' policy (i may be wrong but when i researched last year that was the case then).

    Hi Lowis,

Many thanks for the quick response. I was swaying towards AXA myself and your information was extremely helpful.

    Thanks again :)

LOL, kind of you to think that Lowis :) not sure if its true though.

Right, looked at this petinsurance co.uk policy. There are two levels, which are you being quoted for?

The standard policy is not for life, its £4k max up to 12 months from the date of the condition/injury (less the excess) IN FACT there is something dodgey there about the age of the pets covered there!

Our standard pet insurance covers cats and dogs from the age of 5 weeks to ten years old. The standard plan provides essential vets fees cover up to £4000 per policy period for each illness or injury up to a 12 month period from the date that treatment first started.

The "lifetime" cover does seem to offer just that but:
Once insured a pet will continue to be covered for rest of its life as long as the policy is renewed each year and the appropriate premium is received.
Our lifetime cover policy is our most popular policy and provides essential vets fee cover up to £4000 per policy period.

They havent clearly stated that thats per year but a policy period is a year at a time.

Thanks for your reply to this hethmar. It's a minefield out there isn't it? The quote is for the lifetime policy - not the standard one. I have been with Petplan for years with the cats, but the premiums seem to shoot up quite a lot each year. I've got a cat with a cardio condition, so I do claim for that, but the other cat I've never claimed for. I'm thinking of moving her policy to another insurer now along with my new dog. Just wanted to know if anyone had any experience of this company. I must admit it sounds a bit too good to be true...

    try AXA, Petplan and NFU.

Please note, anything reported to your vet about your dog's health (not necessarily claimed for either!) will be excluded from your new policies.

Oh gawd, yes agree with lowis there. E and L are known as about the worse insurers on the market.

Have gotten a few quotes from AXA M&S and Petplan, AXA and M&S are both cheaper and have a lower excess than Halifax renewal. AXA definately looks the best so far, need to go away and look at the fine print couldn't get a quote from NFU as new policy requires certificates for eye and hip checks for the level of coverage I wanted, apparently new policy for this breed.

Well, out of AXA and M and S - you are probably safest with AXA as M and S change underwriters and policy details which put a lot of us in schtook.
