Once I've done that I will try and see if the graphics card might fit, thats an NVIDIA Geforce FX 5600XT is that better than the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 420? What are the chances that will fit?

In all likelyhood it should fit, as they should both be AGP. Also, the FX5600 is better than the MX420.

I have taken the 2 556mb memory sticks out of the faulty pc and put them into the other one.

Faulty pc had a different make but they both were same size and fit the same.

    Faulty pc had http://www.morecomputers.com/extra.asp?pn=KVR400X64C3A/512&referer=Froogle

    Other pc had http://www.memoryten.com/pc/002577/DDR-184p-PC2100/

I just put them in and when I tried to boot up it wont but gives out a broken continual beep sound, any ideas?
    Thanx

Are they seated correctly in the socket? Try one stick at a time.

I assume the motherboard has 4 slots for RAM? How are all the sticks fitted? 128Mb 512Mb 128Mb 512Mb?

Have you tried removing the original ram and just putting the 2x 512Mb sticks in? Make sure that you have them in the linked slots (two slots should be one colour, two should be a different colour. Put both sticks in the same colour slots.

The motherboard has 2 slots, I removed the 2 128mb ones and put in the 2 512mb ones so there are just 2 512mb ones in 2 slots. They just went in by releasing the end white bits then closing the white bits back up. Should they be really solidly fixed in? as I didnt want to damage them so although they are clipped in I didn't push on them too much.
    Thanx

You could try removing them both, then inserting them again. I know that with my PC, when you insert the ram, you didn't need to close the clips, they closed automatically as you pushed the ram in. And you did need to push fairly hard, so you may simply have not pushed them in fully.

    How best to explain...

Its like the ram clip has a flat bit on the bottom that the ram sits on, so as you push the ram down, it pushes the clip closed. So when the clip is fully closed, the ram is all the way in. But if you manually close the clip, the ram doesn't go down into the slot with it, so it may not be making a proper connection.
Though obviously, you should be careful while handling the ram, avoid touching it anywhere except the edges. And try not to force it too much, you don't want to break it.

Also, I'm not 100% Certain that this is how your type of ram will go in, as I've only experience building with modern DDR2 motherboards, yours may be different.

I did that and the ram is installed and working correctly now so thats good, thankyou :)

I have taken out the graphics card to put in now is it just as simple as fitting it to the other pc and rebooting or do I need to do anything else? What about drivers will the pc find them when I start up?

I want to clean this chrome fan that is under the graphics card, I have taken the top off but cant get the actual fan bit that spins off because the screws are sooo tiny but it has dried residue of wd40 on it that has attracted dirt which cant remove with a brush. Does anyone hve any idea what to use to get those tiny screws off I cant go out to get any comp screwdrivers just now

This chrome fan that is under the graph card is conncted to the card with 2 black things that you can press I've tried srewing them and pressing them but it doesnt seem to be releasing it from the card am I supposed to use these black things to get it off? they are made so they cant slip back off from the other side but wondered if they released it from the underside of the fan?
    Thanx

You should uninstall the old graphics drivers first. This should be a matter of going into the control panel and finding the Nvidia drivers then clicking uninstall. However, there's a chance that the newest Nvidia drivers may not support the oldest cards. Its been a while, but I don't think the drivers supported my MX 440.
Anyway, uninstall the drivers and remove the old card, then just slot the new one in, boot up and try installing the official drivers. If they work, great! If not, try these drivers. They are made by a third party company but based on the official drivers. No chance of damaging your card, and they shouldn't cause crashes, I've used them fine.

As for the fan, without a picture I couldn't possibly say (Though a pic probably wouldn't help me anyway). The recommended way would be to clean it with a can of compressed air, blast the dust out, but thats probably a little bit above and beyond considering how old the card actually is.

It should work straight away after directly swapping, but in a low-detail failsafe mode.

You'll have to downlaod the drivers manually from nvidia's site. It'll look much better after that.

Edit: iviv beat me to it. I think the newest nvidia drivers will still work though. Although the FX 5600XT is quite old, it's not completely forgotten about yet.

I got the fan off by pinching the other side of the black things with tweezers. Now that its off I can see a little bit of creamy stuff on the square plate the fan was attached to should this be left on or can it be cleaned off? it has had wd40 spayed onto it previously wasn't sure if it was that or some protective fluid?

If I uninstal the drivers for the old card if the new one wont work can I reinstall the older one again without problem will the drivers still be somewhere on the system for that?
    Thanx
