Only the lazy ones who don't care about the environment.

As for only washing one side of a plate, what a ridiculous suggestion. Not only is it unhygienic (people do still stack plates don't they?) but how does it use any more water or liquid to wipe a cloth around the underside of a plate as well as the topside?

It's just a lazy excuse from someone who thinks that they're funny.

More to the point, why are we discussing this on a house price board?

Since this whole thread is now off-topic. A fully loaded, A-rated dishwasher is more energy efficient than washing-up.

My view is that money is to enjoy - make your life more comfortable, keep your heating on during the winter to stay warm. If I had a million pounds and I was 65+ I would be enjoying it. After all you cannot take it with you. What are you saving all that money for after all........

Your view is one often quoted to us by a freind.
The point of having assets is freedom. Financial freedom that brings peace of mind, contentment and options.

Thats not to say I admire those ultra meanies for whom the focus is amasing wealth merely for it's own sake.
The goal is surely to ammass wealth for a purpose

I agree whole heartedly, but not all people share a common purpose. For many the freedom is heating and mod cons-whether they be dishwashers or tumble driers, for others its travel, for parents its often their children: the purposes are many and varied, no necessairly right or wrong (although it can stringly be argued some choices are more ethical than others.)

Maisie - the point of hanging onto £1m in retirment is so as to keep the sum in tact and perhaps use it to generate interest / rent. If you spent say £75000 of it each year it would all be gone in 13 years and nothing left to pass onto the generations.
I like home comforts but dislike 'collecting stuff' - most of which is pointless and ends up at the dump anyway.

Furthermore a cluttered home is not a relaxing space to be in. That clutter and chintz, causes the mind to be restless as your brain is constanly having to work and process (without you realising it)
  • But what about inheirtance tax?? A large chunk of the money doesnt pass down the generations - it goes to Gordon Brown. My father is sitting on a house worth in excess of £1m yet he is one of the the meanest men around. I havent seen him for years but my sister does. He refuses to move from his 7 bed house because it would cost money to move yet only lives in a couple of rooms himself. Moans constantly about the upkeep of the place yet like many of his generation (mid 70's) he has a strange mindset about money and what is is meant to be used for in my humble opinion.

I bet Carolt's the type who pinches her lips into a knot while scrutinising her bill in a restaurant. And that would be at about 5 pm in a Happy Harvester on a Get One Meal Free Voucher.:p

I bet pickledpink's the type who always buys the latest and most expensive of everything in a desperate attempt to impress the Joneses, because she has such low self-esteem that she imagines that if she has enough material possessions, some people will like her.

Sadly, she's wrong. They'll just feel very sorry for her and her desperate need to impress others.

    There, there, little girl.....

Its sad when people don't spend on themselves like that, but his choice. As for the inheritance tax, isn't that going up to £2million at the next Election?;)
  • £2 million..... I hope so. Sadly unlikely to happen. I remember when Harriet Harman quoted that women could get up to £30k during maternity leave when Labour brought a new policy in. Turns out you would have to have earned £1 million per year to be eligble for it...

Your poor father. It does sound very sad. Maybe he hopes his children and grandchildren will come to stay? Maybe he's hoping to leave you some money to make you all more comfortable? Maybe it's hard for him to leave his home and familiar surroundings/friends? Maybe he has no idea to spend on the latest gadgets as he wouldn't know what to do with them? Why don't you ask him?

But I wouldn't say he was typical - I don't know anyone like that. My parents live an extremely comfortable existence, and - whilst not rich by any means - are far from poor, enjoy their cruises, social life etc and would never consider freezing in winter! But equally, they have no interest in gadgets, redoing their home yearly, designer clothes. Why should they blow the cash for its own sake?

Keeping cash aside in case of future care bills etc seems sensible. So what if the tax man takes some? I don't think they share your dislike of paying taxes. They can recognise they didn't 'earn' that 1 million - HPI created it and could just as easily take it away.

Carol I think keeping a nose out of personal lives would nice as it reads a bit condescending and inflammatory.
