Does your broadband suddenly stop

Options
We have talktalk bb and frequently find we can't access the web. Sometimes it cuts off in the middle of a job.

We call talktalk, who tell us to call the wireless router company, who tell us there's nothing wrong with that and call our ISP.
We do this, telling TT that the router is fine and has been checked. Miraculously, whilst talking to TT, the internet lights come on.

This also happens if I havent called the Wirelss router helpdesk, but just tell TT that I have.

Does anyone know why??

It's not unusual. Try switching the router off, leaving it for twenty minutes, and switching it back on. This generally works.

There are many and varied reasons. Wireless is great for getting the signal around to those difficult to reach places but by the time it gets there it has been confronted by many sources of interference. If there is a pattern to time of day could be as simple as using as busy channel or as difficult to trace as an electrical component swithing on/off with a slight fault. Advice would always be use Ethernet if possible, if not possible don't leave it on the default channel - try a few others. If its an irritating problem, ditch the helpline, pop along to the TT Members Forums, post your issue and you will get plenty of help. There's a 'Members' Tab on the TT homepage. My TT service is fantastic but I would never call the helpline unless I want to learn poems off by heart.

The question really is if you loose the internet light on the router?
I had this EXACT problem with not only talk talk, but also Orange and latest Madasafish... Only with Tiscali did the problem finally get rectified!
Now I've changed the filters, changed the settings (my router is fine - despite Madasafish's insistence I change my router to eliminate it as the cause - at MY expense!), connected wirelessly/wired, connected straight to the master test socket - you name it I've done it.
Finally I gave up trying to get people to send out BT engineers and went Tiscali... BT engineer had to come out twice and first they fixed a fault in the green box (the ones at the end of the roads) and second time they replaced a lot of copper between the road and the exchange as it was strongly degraded... Now Tiscali could see a lot of interference on the first line test and had no issue sending BT out... in less than a week a fault that has haunted me for over 2 years and 3 ISPs was fixed... :)
Talktalk support? Worse than useless... HOURS of "do this, do that, do it again" until I gave up... I'm a techie by trade, I'm not stupid and I HATE dealing with people less technical than me when they won't listen to what I am telling them! After telling them I'd done nearly everything other than re-wire my house they asked me to re-boot my laptop... right because that will fix the internet light on my router? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Thanks - tnight was truly dreadful - the internet was up and down more time than the proverbial *****'s drawers.
Was on the "second line" for more than an hour each time.

Have always tried switching off router, rebooting pc, checking /changing microfilter, turning off tv and microwave, taking router's electric plug away from phone electric plug, checking master test thing, changing router, spitting in the wind, crossing fingers and throwing salt...

Our speed is really slow as well. Cant watch TV at all on it - but its cheap. Not sure at the moment if its worth it.

Oh well. Just calmed down again after 2 hrs tonight listening to Roger McGough over and over again, with a woman telling me about the very short wait I was having whilst waiting for technical help...

Linksys tell me I should leave router swithced on, but TT say I should switch it off when not in use to keep it cool. WHo is right?
I dont like leaving stuff switched on, usually, but I do need a fairly reliable BB and damagng router will cost more than leaving its power on (if Linksys is right)

By the way, think Linksys's helpline is really good and staff are very patient!

Sounds like your router is on the way out, same was happening to us on Tiscali, then the X-Box wouldn't connect at all. Got a new router, no everything is working perfectly.

  • Sounds like your router/modem is doing what TalkTalk supplied modems do!!! I had the same probs for 3 weeks, their support services were not much help either.
I purchased a Belkin router & everything works perfectly now (as it did pre TalkTalk.)
When TalkTalk tech support eventually called me back & I told them of my Belkin router the chap actually said 'that will be an end to your problem.'
This suggests to me that they know that the modems that they issue may or may not work.
