Changes to BT 1280

Martin still not posted an article on this? I hope its not on the backburner for him.
Sky seem to be feeling the pinch on sky talk cancellations, starting the end of this month to get their free broadband you now will need a sky talk package as well as tv.
I hope this only applies to new contracts. I have Sky TV and enjoy free broadband, but have just gone back to BT (from Primus) for my calls.0 -
I agree i am in the same situation and have just switched back to bt on a 12 month contract. however if sky try this i hope martin will get involved. failing that sky will be one customer lessI hope this only applies to new contracts. Sky seem to have very aggressive marketing for Sky Talk. I recently bought a new Sky+ box through them, and despite telling them I am locked in with my current provider (I was lying at the time) they still tried to push it on me.
However, if things do go that way I will just upgrade to the £5 a month tariff for my broadband. Still a damn sight cheaper than potentially being locked into a telephone provider with no means of making cheaper calls.0 -
I changed back to BT almost 2 weeks ago and my change-over from Sky cps is tomorrow. I received a letter from Sky yesterday confirming that. They did not mention broadband access at all in the letter.
I have the free base service but signed up to Sky Talk as a stand alone product later than my other services.
So I too am hoping that contracts do not get changed regarding the broadband/TV that I have at present.

Yes, Sky's March 2009 changes are worrying a lot of people I would imagine. So I too am hoping that contracts do not get changed regarding the broadband/TV that I have at present.
THIS appears to be the official Sky version.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -
This is terrible - what can we do?
Perhaps they should scrap Base and compulsory charge for Mid?
There's actually some new info. on Sky User - follow Heinz's link above to post #119

I see the advice to use 1280 is still on the 'Home phones' page without a caveat regarding some service providers. It is still on BT Privacy pages too.
I only found out today that I have been paying TalkTalk for some recent support calls that I use just to keep the BT Privacy 'free'. I have yet to receive an email from either BT or TT to explain the new charges caused by the 1280 change. So BT claim it's not their fault? They are the ones offering the WLR3 package to service providers as an option to CPS. TT blaming BT? That's because they want more of our money.
I am looking into options available to me now. I need the BT line for broadband, the odd 0845 or 0870 numbers & little else, because Orange have given me a good package with unlimited (?) landline calls and 300 mobile minutes for £10. It also includes the livebox and broadband!0 -
Just found this thread again after a few months... meant to sort this out ages ago.
Currently got sky talk, and with friends and family in Australia and the US, aswell as many daytime calls, it works as a good deal for our usage.
The line rental is still with BT, and we're signed up for free CLI & 1571.
So, just logged into BT, and sure enough no chargeable calls since the last bill of 11th Sep. Next bill due on the 11th Dec, so they're sure to charge us the penalty.
Now, with no way of making any chargeable calls directly, is anyone aware if using a chargecard will count? 6 calls of 12p each is a fair bit cheaper than £6 or so.
Longer term, is there anything inherently bad with having sky talk handle line rental? Given we can't switch the odd call back to BT we don't stand to lose too much, and the saving of £1.75pm should cover the very few 084/7 numbers that saynoto0870 doesn't bring up.0 -

.
A good idea! Unfortunately it is unlikely to work as the UK access code 144 probably translates to 0800 144 144, which is not a chargeable or inclusive call for the purposes of being eligible for free caller display.0
