I buy a 2.5kg bag of potatoes every week but I find that after a few days they are sprouting all kinds of things  If they're not to bad I just cut these off but some look really bad. I'd buy a smaller bag but I can never find them on tesco.

Somebody said you should peel, cut and store potatoes in a tub of water in the fridge and they'll last a week - does anybody know if this works?

    Thanks in advance guys :)

Store the bag with an apple in it. The apple prevents potatoes from sprouting so quickly. Always works for me, anyway. :)

I've never tried that (don't fancy the idea myself), but how about putting them in an old cotton pillowcase to cut out the light and putting them somewhere like the cupboard under the stairs (as long as you don't forget them)?
  • im interested in the feedback on this - ive always kept mine in the fridge...never noticed any problems.

Definitely don't store them in the plastic bag. They need to breathe - so a cotton pillowcase or hessian bag would be better.

Could store them in the shed / garage as that would be cooler than the house.
  • lol so my tatts are being ruined in the fridge - im going to move them now!!

Thanks for all the quick replies :) I'll put them in a pillowcase then and put them in the cupboard.

    Thanks very much :)

buy dirty potatoes rather than the prewashed ones! the dirtier the better.
i keep them in a bowl in a kitchen cupboard with a piece of kitcj=hen role in the bottom to absorb any moisture.

  • I buy potatoes from the farm shop - you can then buy as many or as few as you like :D

Alternatively, take a look at this older thread - Help! How to store potatoes?
