My Mum keeps hers in the fridge but I don't do that i've made myself a spud sack with a drawstring out of a piece of curtain blackout lining. Just hem three sides and put a string in. Keeps them dark but lets them breathe.0

I use an old large terracotta flowerpot to keep potatoes in and throw a teacloth over the top to keep the light out. It works well and looks good on the shelf.0

I have one of those potato storage bags cost me a £5 but is great as it has a handle on it making it easier to pick up.
I put that in my larder. Which is cooler than the rest of my kitchen.

Hi confused newbie,
I think we live in the same town so you could send them round to me.I take them out of the plastic bags and store them in crate in the garage where it's quite dark and cool and that seems to help them last longer.
If they are sprouting, just remove the sprouts and use them in the normal way. There are lots of ideas that might help use them up these threads:
Sprouting spuds ............
How many things can you do with potatoes.
There's an older thread with lots of ideas on storing potatoes so I'll add your thread to it to keep the replies together.

I bought the potato bag from lakeland, but it doesnt seem to make that much difference. The best thing I found was when they used to sell the potatoes in those brown paper sack type bags in Lidls - they used to last for ages, but they have now stopped that and its back to plastic bags.
I keep mine in a cupboard in the dark and they still sprout in days0 -
I have mine in a cupboard so they are kept in the dark but they don't seem to be lasting very long.
Thanks.0 -
I keep mine in an old metal dustbin just outside the kitchen door - they keep better in this than a cupboard during the winter cos of the cold.0

They should be in the dark and cool but in a breathable bag ie paper or fabric, not plastic. Soil covered potatoes will keep better than washed ones.0

In a large terracotta flowerpot, covered with a tea-cloth so they are in the dark, but can breathe. I keep the flowerpot on a low shelf in the kitchen.0

Ah... I keep mine in the plastic bag in the cupboard which is where I'm probably going wrong then. I'll try find something else to put them in I think.
