I bought a potato bag in the current Lakeland sale £2.99. I store all my other veg in Lakeland green bags and they really work as I very rarely have to throw veg out. They are expensive but can be used several times if carefully washed.

    Hi again

    yet another question :o

i buy potatoes from the supermarket, and they always seem to grow eyes within a day or two. is this normal?? am i storing them wrong?

i have just started keeping them in an old pillowcase, as i was told they last longer if kept in darkness

    any ideas?

    TIA x

Pop an apple in with the spuds it will stop them flowering!

  • when i buy a bag of potatos within a week or 2 they have gone green an look like they rotting... i want to buy the big bags and make them last but where should i store them? also are they safe to eat once they have those nobbly bits? (are they called eyes?)
  • Store them in paper or cloth, not plastic, and keep them dark and cool.

As for green - I was always under the impression that wasn't good, but so long as you cut it out you should be fine. Sprouts aren't a problem - lop them off. The only time I totally reject spuds are if they're soft.

  • I now keep mine in a large plastic box along with the other root veg. I make sure the soil on them is dry then I tip everything in there and the veg sits in a good dusting of dry soil. It seems to keep much longer that way. I occasionally buy veg that has already been washed and again, I make sure it's dry then add it to the dirt!

Bit of a random one here. Can anyone tell me the best way/place to store potatoes? There is just hubby and I at home and to be honest I end up throwing more away than we actually use. They tend to get wee funny things on them, like wee bits growing out or something and then I throw them away.

Just wondered if I am storing them wrong or is this what happens after a few days?

just store them in a cool dark place they will be fine. They do shoot, but it's normal, you don't have to throw the spud away just break the shoots off as they sap the moisture out, they'll still be perfectly fine to use as long as they haven't gone soft, wrinkly or green :D
