We buy 25kg sacks from the local farmer .they have a bit of mud on them but at least they have not been washed to death (I think washed poatoes coupled with plastic bags go mouldy faster than unwashed)... we store them in the paper sacks they come in folding the top down to keep the light out (light turns them green) ...spuds should be stored in a cold as place as posible but protected from frost which ruins them .

  • I read somewhere that potatoes will keep well if you cover them with earth and keep them in a box somewhere cool like a garden shed, though I've never tried it. I keep mine in a black cotton bag with a drawstring in the fridge, and they seem to keep for ages.

  • I have real trouble shopping as i can only buy a bag of potatoes cos if i buy more they go off within two days, i can only go shopping once a week as i have got 2 young kids and i dont drive.
So how can i keep the potatoes from going off so quick so i can buy for more meals through the week
    Thanks

There's bound to be another thread on this somewhere an no doubt the powers that be will move it, but I swear by the Lakeland potato bag. I'll go see if I can find a link ... yup, here it is. (I hope.) And I'm sure someone will tell you how to make one yourself too.

Don't keep them in the fridge, take them out of any plastic and keep them in the dark. Should last you.

I got fed up of throwing mine away after a couple of days too, I tried putting them in a dark cupboard in a black bag but they just sprouted very quickly  , now I keep them in the fridge and they last a lot longer.

I take mine out of any plastic wrappings and put in vegetable rack out in the garage, where it's both darker and cooler. Keeping rate is pretty good - certainly don't buy more often than weekly, sometimes less frequently.

I put in whatever paper bag I have to hand and store them in a cool cupboard. They keep okay for about 10 days. But I'm not put off by them sprouting :) I use them anyway...

Keep them in a cool dark airy place.

Or cook them, mash them and freeze them.
