My dog (cocker spaniel again) goes to the groomers on average every 4-6 weeks and gets a bath and a tidy up. I don't have the time to give her the attention she needs and she's an indoors dog. I have a really sensitive nose ( one of the reasons she's bathed so often). I have to say, she's never looked better - but how often you bathe does depend a lot on whether your dog is indoors or out.

Judging by the smell of her when she comes back, my groomer uses baby shampoo.

I have 2 retrievers and never wash them. They are 9 and 5 now. I had black labs before that and remember having to wash them when they found delicious things to roll in, like dead fish, seagulls and the odd bit of stinky stink fox poo.

  • you shouldnt bath your dog too often, it makes their skin dry. Mine only gets bathed when she has rolled in something stinky, but she does do that quite often!
I use wilko pupy shampoo with aloe vera, worked wonders on my dogs dandruff and leaves her coat beautiful and shiny. Its also reasonably priced, £2 or £2.50 I think.

not since we moved house, so that's since december 2001!

she's a 11yo black lab x border collie and thankfully hasn't got a thing for dead fish, pidgeons or fox poo :D

Our weimaraner never gets bathed. If he rolls in anything, we wipe him with a damp cloth or wet wipe if we're out on a long walk and dont want his smell in the car. The american cocker gets a bath maybe twice a year if that, and thats not done by us, the groomer does it. She has a hair cut every 6-8 weeks, (Belle, not the groomer :rotfl: ) but groomer doesnt think bathing her every time is neccessary. Shes brushed every day, as she gets muddy and gets twigs etc stuck in the fur in her legs, this seems to keep her clean enough. I hate the smell of that doggie perfume some groomers use, first time we got Belle groomed she came back smelling like an old lady and I sneezed for a week until the smell wore off, she never went back to that one.

  • My dog gets fully washed about 3 times per year; i use Dermapet MalAcetic shampoo its soap and solvent free and helps calm sensitive skin.

Twice in 13 years! The first time he got covered in tar on the beach & the second time he chased after the seagulls over the mud flats & was covered in stinking mud that had deisel in it!

We will give him a hose down after a muddy walk - but nothing more.

Mine (two springers) do lots of swimming, which helps keep them fresh. And I'm lucky that our new local park is by a small river so they can have a mucky walk but finish off with a swim so they can get themselves clean before coming home.

If they are smelly I'm a bit sneaky and bring a small bottle of Ecover shampoo with me on walks and give them a quick rub with it when they are between swims.

It's bad for dogs to be washed too much in winter also as it washes away the natural oils in their hair which help to protect them from the cold.
  • roughly every month and two depending on how many 'muddy' walks we go on...

I use Groomers products as these seem to be the best for dog's coats and they smell lovely too.

Holly unlike most dogs loves bathtime and are favourite thing is being dried with the hairdryer, she goes mad!! :D
