Ikea have cardboard scratching posts in packs of 3. They aren't as fancy as the ones from pet stores but they are recylacble and only cost £3 for 3 so you can have a few around the house while the littly gets used to where she can and can't scratch.
No bed attached but with my little swine, every time we bought her a proper bed she wouldn't use it. She sleeps where she pleases whether its a basket of clean washing or in the most uncomfortable looking toolbox with spanners poking her in the bum
  • Our kittens are now 4 months old and growing fast. They both use the scratching post, which we had ready for when we brought them home, and they rarely scratch anuything else. Unfortunately the scratching post was a gift from the inlaws, so I've no idea where they got it from or how much it cost - sorry!

Does anyone have any thoughts / experiences of chipping versus collars for indentification if they get lost?
  • Aww she's gorgeous!

The scratchng posts on offer at Lidl are pretty good value for money.

Mine have had some of the smaller ones and the larger ones over the last few years and they love them! They totally destroy them eventually though...better that than the furniture!!!!

Awww she looks just like our kittens brother and sister (they were all black, she has white feet and belly)!!

We got one of the big scratching posts / play pens for our little girl and although she doesnt use it as much as she could. She likes to hide on the top post (its about 5 foot high) and tease the dogs (this is generally after they chase each other around). She also likes to launch from the top onto our heads / shoulders when shes in a playing mode.

    That's a very cute cat!

Definately microchipping .. I've lost count of the number of collars I've bought .. they always fall off.

Also I have probably had 7 cats in my life and none of them liked the collar, at least with the chip they arent aware of it.
  • Tomorrow I am going to pick up my new kitten and I'm terrified!!!

This is my first ever pet! i only got back from holiday earlier this evening so I don't actually have a lot of stuff! All i have so far is a litter tray and a few whiskas pouches that i got free!

What else am i going to need?? Our local pound shop does quite a lot of stuff so I think that will be my first stop tomorrow before I go and collect her!

The kitten (female) is about 12 weeks old. I'm assuming the lady who has her won't have had her vacinated or wormed yet (although I will obviously check!) if she hasn't when will this need doing?

    Also what about insurance?!

sorry to be a pain but I want to make sure my new [STRIKE]baby[/STRIKE] kitten (!!!) will be happy and properly looked after!

    Thanks

You will also need water and feeding bowls. Cat litter, a scratch post, if you don't want your sofa to be used at one :D Kitten dry food too, in case he/she doesn't take to the wet food.

Don't panic, kittens are a joy to have around and you will be fine. If you need any help and advise, just post here, many of us have or have had kittens and will be glad to help.

Hi! I am getting my new kitten in about 2 weeks and I was at my local vet today to buy worming tablets for my current cat. I enquired about worming tablets for the kitten and he said that I would need to worm it every 2 weeks until it is 12 weeks old then monthly until it was 6 months. I didn't know that your supposed to worm kittens as often as this - I didn't do it with the other cats I have had. As your kitten is around 12 weeks, I suppose you would just need to worm it monthly until it was 6 months. Go to your local vet and they will give you the tablets required, my vet said they are really cheap for kittens and I think 1 tablets kills both round and tape worm.
If you have a pound shop local then they do cat toy packs and there are lots of different things in them which I'm sure your kitten will enjoy - as they are very playful and mischevious, they need things to keep them amused.
Lastly, you need to keep the kitten inside for 2-3 weeks but I'm sure you will be aware of this anyway. Good luck with your kitten.

I forgot to say - don`t allow the kitten on your furniture or allow other people to encourage it to sit on their lap as it will start jumping on the furniture/worktops etc as it will think that it is ok to do this. I have never encouraged my cats to sit on my lap and my one knows it is not allowed up on the furniture. There`s nothing worse than getting covered in cat hair if the cat has been on the furniture. Oh and invest in a sticky roller as your clothes will end up with cat hair on them at some point. LOL:rotfl:
