oooooooo, i had a thought (please correct me if this has been done before)
lets start a kitten list thread. Everyone can list a tip (especially money saving ones) and if you can maybe upload a picture of your mog (if i can work out how to do that) and than anyone with a new baby mog can run through it for advice.

That is a great idea! I am going to adopt a kitten in about 3 weeks after I have moved to my new place, and could do with all the tips I can get! lol
I've had cats before, but never on my own, and I'm very nervous about doing things right for the little mite. :D

  • Well I finally found and brought home my own little bundle of joy a few days ago. I really wanted to ask what worming meds work best (in the past I used Panacur Paste) but it's really expensive now!

Also I'm looking at scratch posts, does anyone have any offers at the moment? I'm leaning towards the big ones with the sleeping compartment as my other 2 when they were young loved it.

This is my 1st time posting a pic so hopefully will come out ok!!

Her name is Lucky (original I know!) & she is 8 weeks (just!).

Hi Tortie, Aww how cute is she !!

Try http://www.petmeds.co.uk/ for panacur, they work out much cheaper than buying from the vets !

When I got my kitten, I made her a scratching / play centre by using the inners from a roll of carpet ( like a huge loo roll centre ) some sisal string that I bought off ebay, some offcuts of hardboard, and a hot glue gun!!

It worked really well, and was much cheaper than buying one, in fact, I thing it cost me about £3.50 !!

Check with your vet what worming programme you should use, and do your own research too (ie check packets/manufacturers websites). That way you make sure that you have a good understanding of the wormers available, and know what you are worming against. The wormers available in the supermarket really are false economy, as they don't provide protection against all type of worms. From a quick look it seems that Panacur gives protection against tape, round and lung worms, where others (even Drontal & Milbemax) do not protect against lungworm.

Scratch posts are on offer at the moment - £6.99 for this deluxe one!

I agree that it's best to ask your vet, i get mine from ther and its cheaper than supermarkets or wilkos. mines just reached 6 months and to be honest I had no idea how much she would cost, the foods not bad(supermarket own brand) but the jabs, identichip and the cost of getting her speyed bumped the cost quite a bit. I remember a friend saying that bob martin products were very good for worming. i bought a scratch post for £10 and its never been used.

What a cute kitty!. I have a vet that has a pet plan. I pay about £18 a month for two cats, which covers all vacinations, worming tabs, flea treatments and gives me 20% off all other treatments. You could see if your vet does the same. Also a lot of worming tabs and flea treatments you get outside of the vets don't work so well as the beasties are immune to them. Enjoy!:T
  • Thanks for all you posts :)

I really wish I could make a scraching post but being totally useless in that department I think I will probably buy one!

My tom cat unexpectedly came face to face with her today and he just laid low and let out a longgggg growl, which Lucky took as "back off!" and back stepped to the wall!

I am trying to introduce them slowly by scent etc but I am really worried about how it will effect my tom as he was my little baby and always beside me.

I've done lots of reading about this so hopefully it will pay off! it doesnt stop me constantly worrying though!

On the worming think I will use panacur and buy online, soo much cheaper, thanks again everyone that posted :)
