Just while this is here I'll post two useful sites, first is for freeware and is continuosly updated Gizmos freeware:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/
The next is for portable freeware of which I'm a big fan, already mentioned is portable apps but I find this site very useful:
http://www.portablefreeware.com/
Now as an aside note(Almost getting cold sweats and I have the correct grammar this time) this may be of interest as different from PortableApps:

I agree with Iviv, Sourceforge is a good plce to start looking, an example is Podgin, an instant messenger that allows you to link all yr IM's in one place. It's open source and "cross platform" ( Windows, Linux etc)0

Just finished reading the free software page and have a couple of comments...
It's worth noting that Nvu and Handbrake are shown only under MacOS, but also have versions available for Windows and Linux.
Nvu is no longer actively developed - the last version was released back in 2005. Try Kompozer instead, which is based on the same code but is under active development. See: kompozer.net0 -
Guys, can I suggest http://www.freewarebb.com which is my own site. I'm not simply trying to promote my own site, well ok I am, but I have good reason. We basically do things differently to other download sites, first and foremost we're a forum, like MSE, and as such have a large community of users who look out for each other and us by letting us know of problems they encounter whilst using freeware and this info is put directly on the site and for those developers who consider it worthwhile to sneak potentially harmful files into their freeware we basically out them. For example, 2 posts above mine is a reference to nch.com.au, who we have found to be distributors of potentially harmful software and unlike other download sites who will keep these listings (probably because they are getting link-backs from those sites) we will remove the download links and null the website links to them as well as place a notice on why we have done this. Then, anyone browsing our site will know NOT to trust these developers in future.
We also don't add just anything, we consider whether the freeware application is useful or just one of many attempts by untrustworthy developers to get exposure for their website (which is usually plastered in affiliate links or advertisements!). Everything we do on FreewareBB is manual, and thorough - we check all the URL's including the developers website manually and the download links, we scan all the files manually using a number of scanning services including VirusTotal.
Our mission is to provide a safe, family friendly environment for everyone who simply wants to have clean freeware downloads and at the same time warn everyone about the developers who turn bad. Hope you find time to check us out.
Kind Regards

If you work for a company which uses Microsoft Office, you should check to see if they participate in the Microsoft Home Use scheme. If they do, you can buy a copy of Office 2007 Enterprise with a licence for 2 computers for £9.95. Whilst not technically free – it’s very cheap.
You can only buy one copy of the software from the scheme per year – so if anyone finds they are eligible to participate in the scheme I suggest they wait until June when the version on offer will be updated to Office 2010 Enterprise.0 -

I found this article very useful but I am specifically looking for a free Housekeeping accountancy software to help a friend with her budgeting. Can anyone suggest anything. I am a bit scared of just surfing and downloading without recommendation. Thanks

Microsoft recently released their "Money" software for free, it doesn't have the online facilities it used to when it was commercial software, but it's about the best home finance program out there for free
