Can anyone recommend a standalone freeware spreadsheet program for Windows XP that is compatible with Microsoft Excel, please? (I know that the Open Office one is good, but unfortuantely you have to download their entire office suite which I don't want to do).
None that I know of (particularly because it'd be difficult to compete with Calc). Any particular reason you don't want to install Open Office? I'd have thought it worth it even if only using one of the apps. Not as if you HAVE to use all the apps or abandon other office software you use.
Are you a registered student or have any schoolchildren or teachers in your household? Are you employed by the NHS? Just thinking of ways to get MS Office very cheaply."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Gnumeric should be what you need http://www.gnome.org/projects/gnumeric/downloads.shtml0 -
Hi everyone.
Please excuse me for being a bit thick, but I am a complete technophobe. I've downloaded Open Office as recommended in the article, and in the folder I saved it too there appears to be about 9 programs/folders/things (java, readmes, licenses, openofficeorg1 etc.).
I assumed their equivalent of Microsoft Word would be in the "openofficeorg1" folder (cabinet file), but I can't find it.
I want to make the equivalent of a word doc. Can anybody help?
Thanks.0 -

You've only downloaded it. You need to install it as well. Just like any other application."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

I cant remember now, but there should be a 'setup.exe' file or suchlike?:idea:0 -
Did you download the correct version of OpenOffice for your computer i.e. Mac, Windows, Linux etc? If it is Windows then all that you need to do is run the file you downloaded - probably called something like OOo_3.0.0_Win32Intel_install_wJRE_en-US.exe - and it will create the OpenOffice program in your Windows start menu and (if you select the option) as an icon on the desktop. Run that and you are in business.
What you are seeing is the temporary folder which is left behind after installation. You can safely delete that.0 -
I have been giving this DVD Author programme a bash. You need to emply a bit of detective work with left and right clicks but i am seriously impressed at the first results.
I have been tearing my hair out with PowerDirector 7 or Sony Vegas. This is FREE and a worthy addition to those who would use it.

Also, http://osx.iusethis.com lists popular freeware and shareware Mac software.
In addition, I've posted this before, but worth a bump again for Mac users, a very comprehensive list of free applications in various categories here: http://web.mac.com/simon_elliott/simon_elliott%40mac.com/Software.html0 -

Don't know if it's already been mention, but Total Commander is free as long as you can put up with "This program is not registered - press X to start" type messages. We use it at work and it's invaluable for copying/renaming loads of files at once.
