The Office deal at SoftwareforStudents is now far more easy to benefit from as you can use any email address / shipping address and you just need the name of the pupil/student and the educational establishment - my son's grandparents bought a 2 license copy for ~£35 using my son's details, and I have bought the same using my daughter's details. Only one copy per year per student (!)The site says:
The Key Facts About Eligibility.
1. All School, College and University students and their family members are eligible!
2. No Student ID required for Microsoft Software: As an Official Microsoft Partner, our offers extend beyond .ac.uk email address holders so that any family member or guardian can afford to buy on behalf of a pupil or student.
I have no relationship with this company - just sharing a good deal that worked - and suggest main page is updated0 -
I have seen some discussion about Lotus Symphony v. OpenOffice here, and wanted to add my comments. Symphony is a repackaging of OpenOffice that IBM are making available for free, and it is currently based on OpenOffice 2. OpenOffice 3 is available, and supports MS Office 2007, so that does have an advantage, but Symphony will catch up later this year.
Symphony has the advantage of backing from IBM for the support side so up to you to choose (e.g. see Support and Help on the site below) - their aim I believe is to offer an alternative to the dominance of Office, particularly in the business world (which is where my knowledge comes from - we are using it).
See symphony.lotus.com for free download and help / support0 -
Hiya - I've got MS Office installed on my lappie but not Outlook for some reason. Where can I get a good alternative? I don't want to pay loads for the actual programme itself. Many thanks.0

Stellarium is a brilliant free planetarium programme, It shows a realistic sky in 3D, just like what you see with the naked eye, binoculars or a telescope.

It depends what features he wants, and what OS.
Ardour and Audacity are both Open Source and both intended as multi-track recorder and editor suites.
He might also like to try the UbuntuStudio distribution, which has quite a few sound editing and related tools. It includes a drum machine with a user interface that's so simple even I can use it...0 -

OS will be Win XP.
I'm not altogether sure that he even knows what he actually wants .
I'll download the ideas and give them to him to check out.Never put off till tomorrow what you can do today!
