Tesco do not need to "override" the system to accept a card without a chip - the system will automatically print a slip for these cards and will continue to do so. The only overriding that needs to be done is if the customer cannot remember their PIN and wants to sign - they will not be able to do that from 14th February.

Override the system is the phrase the store manager used. In our local store, signing for cards was withdrawn from yesterday so it appears they are phasing it in gradually in their stores. The staff need to be told they can still print the slip for Clubcard Plus cards and it was clear from the manager's reaction (and admission) that this had not occurred to him.

But the staff do not need to take any particular action. If they swipe a non-chipped card, the slip will be printed automatically.

The staff will not be allowed to swipe cards anymore though so they need to be told that Clubcard Plus cards can be taken and should be swiped. All other cards will be refused if they do not have chips or the customer does not know their pin. Its about what the staff understand they can do and what they can't and the issue with Clubcard Plus cards is one that our local store manager had not given any thought to before Saturday.

I presume his "overriding the system" remark refers to them still swiping the Plus cards, rather than doing anything else specific with the till to allow the transaction.

The followin URL from the Chip & PIN people should clarify numerous points raised in this topic. It maybe well worthwhile bringing it to the attention of Tesco.

Dont be locked out, have a card that says yes at point of sale and no at cash machines. Don't worry about having to be responsible for something (a PIN) which may cost your dear! Get yourself a Chip & Signature (credit) Card!

The sign in my local Tesco states clearly that all card transactions will have to be made using Chip and Pin from 1st January so a Chip and Signature card would be of no use there.

They are obviously going to make an exception for their own cards which don't even have chips.
  • If Tesco is the only supermarket that insists on taking the card, then perhaps they are the only one that will get 150 quid for retaining a stolen one. Method in their madness?

But as shown in this thread the Tesco tills are different in that all cards have to be swiped before the chip can be read. The only overriding that staff would have to do would be to allow somebody to sign for a C&P transaction (which Tesco will no longer allow).

What this thread has shown is that even Tesco management do not know how their tills work!
  • Just a thought, have any of these Tesco stsores with incorrect notices got self-sevice tills? As the self-service tills are not C&P enabled are they going to shut them down?
  • In my local store the self serve checkouts still operate without chip and pin but they still do swipe and signature at the normal tills. Not sure why so many stores have imposed a ban on swiping cards. The deadline isn't for another couple of months!

The store near where my sister lives doesn't even ask for a signature on those self-serve things. No check that you are the owner of the card. Shocking.
