I was in there at the end of Oct with £100 of shopping that had been scanned and packed away.
I forgot my pin number and they wouldn't by-pass it, so i got my shopping taken away. Went out tot eh car to get my cheque book and came back in to be told they had put my shopping away and could i leave.
Complained to Tescos but never heard anything back.

The issues with Clubcard Plus though are different to producing a chipped card and not knowing your pin.
a) it does not have a chip in the first place and there are no plans for chipping in the near future
b) it is Tesco's own debit card
c) it is pre-loaded with my monthly shopping budget
Therefore, to honour the card and allow me access to my own money, they will have to override the system to print a slip and I have now been told by those operating the card and the store manager they will do so although as I have said, on Saturday he had not even realised there was an issue. I may well drop in there tomorrow and see what happens, before I need to do my main weekly shop and end up unable to pay for it.0 -
Still annoying whatever the reasons, especially as it can still be by-passed until Feb and the 2 Tescos 5 mins either direction of the store i was in still by-pass.Lightbulb moment Dec 2005 - debt £23700
June 2010 - £17984.210 -
Tesco do not need to "override" the system to accept a card without a chip - the system will automatically print a slip for these cards and will continue to do so. The only overriding that needs to be done is if the customer cannot remember their PIN and wants to sign - they will not be able to do that from 14th February.0

Its' only Tesco which hasn't linked up. A real security issue - you shouldn't be handing your card (debit or credit) to anyone at all these days. Restaurants have mobile machines, some bluetooth and some with long curly wires, so that you have no reason to give anyone access to your three digit security number. Otherwise, hide your number - Tippex it over and keep a record somewhere else not connected with your card.
The system works this way for a good reason for Tesco Credit Card customers. The card when swiped gives the clubcard details and then uses the chip to authorise the payment.0 -
Gers wrote:Can I just draw your attention to another security risk at Tesco's tills? They haven't linked up the machine to allow you to put your card into in - you are forced to hand over your card to the checkout person who swipes it. Now, the WHOLE point of C&P and the reading machines is to allow you to keep a hold of your own card and not give it to anyone else who COULD read your three digit security code on the back of it. Once they have your receipt and your three digit code they can merrily buy things over the internet and by phone.0

That's the whole point I was making! The card has to be given to the the checkout operator. That goes against the ethos of C&P. Why is it just Tesco going against the grain here. The company is risking the security of the customer's credit/debit card for what?????
Seems utter nonsense to me.0 -
King_Of_Fools wrote:The receipt will not have the credit card number printed in full so you would have to copy a lot more than three digits for this to work. Also online transactions alo require the billing address which would not be available.
The checkout operator has the complete receipt which does show ALL your numbers on it, otherwise the company would be unable to draw down the money.
So, they retrieve the receipt, gather the card number and tie it up with the three digit code - simple!!
Billing address is a different matter. Goods can still be obtained easily over the phone without giving billing address, especially overseas. Once your details have been obtained then the thief can spend, spend, spend until you notice that your account is being either being drained (debit) or filled up (credit) - either way it's deep trouble.
It's your money, your credit, don't let anyone have a hold of your card. It's madness.

If they took the receipt Tesco would start asking questions as to where they are going. But I am not sure that they do have the full number on the store copy they are purely for audit purposes and all the transactions are done electronically.
I didn't say that the receipt was TAKEN - just retrieved then the CC number and other details from the card noted. Sorry, I probably didn't explain that bit clearly. The receipt isn't removed so any audit wouldn't show up any problem. You're probably correct about the transaction at Tesco being done electronically but I wasn't talking about Tesco being defrauded, more the customer.
I don't know of any other major retailer who, so far, hasn't linked up the keypad card slot (don't know it's proper name, if it has one). Whilst other retailers may LIKE you to hand over your card they mostly give in very quickly when the customer insists on using the keypad card slot, and in fact it makes it even less work for the checkout operator/till assistant.
The written word looks so harsh when written down - please don't think I'm getting argumentative here.
