I do not believe that they will not accept signatures, I think they may be trying to say that they will not override PINs and accept signatures instead. That is not quite the same thing.

Ask what they will do if when authorising a chip enabled card they get a prompt to accept a signature instead of a PIN.

Well, they made it quite clear to me that they won't be accepting signatures or unchipped cards. I wonder if Rafter is right about this being a one-store test because the zillions of notices that has been put up had obviously just been knocked up on a PC - they weren't official posters.

Well that's very interesting, given my clubcard+ (clubcard that acts as debit card) is still signature, not chip.

Hermia, are you sure they're not saying that if a card is chipped, they'll only accept chip & pin post October? (ie they won't take chip & signature)

I threw a strop with Tesco about not chipping their clubcard plus cards when they first introduced C + P. They told me that they had no plans to chip their cards. They will have to continue to take them or stop toppiing the accounts up.

There has been some discussion on here about whether the whole clubcard plus scheme is being withdrawn and people wanting to apply for cards have not received application forms and are fobbed off when they phone.

I have to agree with the posters who state that it is the tesco staff misunderstanding a memo. If a card is Chip and Pin and you don't know your pin then Tesco can refuse to let you sign. If a card is chip and signature then you will be able to carry on signing as you do now. All shops will have to be enabled to accept signature based cards for years yet anyway. It will only change when the whole world goes chip and pin. Places like the US and Australia do not have chip and pin so they need to be able to use their cards when they come here. Also, UK chip and pin cards will have to have to have a signature option for when we travel overseas to a non chip and pin country.

I recently lost my Amex Card, the replacement has pin and chip so ....just 'lose' the old card if you are that worried.

Tesco's in Hayes are having trouble getting their chip and pin to work, I have been asked to sign the last 2 months with most of the number consoles being out of order (both Yeading and Bulls Bridge branches), so I can't see it working too well in this area !!

I think the contents of this post show just how much confusion and sPIN surrounds this whole subject.

This is from the Chip & PIN website:

From 14 February 2006, you’ll have to use your PIN to make sure you can pay with a chip and PIN card.

Note: the words 'to make sure,' NOT you won't be able to pay.

    The site also says:

You can continue to use non-chip and PIN cards in all outlets, and you will be asked to sign for goods, just as you always have done.

The site also has a feedback facility. Why not use it to feedback your concerns.

Confused then give Mark Bowerman, Association for Payment Clearing Services (Communications Executive) a call on 020 771 6234

Sounds like it could be a one store test by tesco to see what the impact and customer reaction will be. It also gives them ammo to beat up banks who aren't ready.

I'm sure they will continue to accept - they are just testing customer reaction.

    R.

I don't think a huge company like Tesco would be silly enough to risk upsetting a whole stores worth of customers by doing that on purpose. Think of all the bad press it would create. It was just an overzealous member of staff or management.

I think the confusion is the difference between the different types of cards.

Chip and Pin, you will have to use your pin!

Chip and signature, (where the customer has requested one, for disability reasons etc) older signature cards that just happen to have a chip on, and chipless cards you will still be able to sign.

Either Tescos has worded the sign wrong or the OP has read it wrong.

I work in retail and am looking forward to Feb 14th :D

Doesn't sound right, my payment card is a Tesco ClubcardPlus (the green one) which is not chip and pin. I have rung Tesco today and they say there is no change on my card for the forseeable future. I can only use it in Tesco so it would be daft for them to prohibit its use.
