Tesco no longer accepting non-chipped cards after Oct - arg!

Spoke to the manager of my local Tesco yesterday as the notice still says exactly the same thing, which is that all card transactions from today must be chip and pin.
It turns out that the manager also has a Clubcard Plus card and it had not occurrred to him that there would be a problem. He agreed that on the current brief to their staff, from today they would have been refusing to accept the cards as they have no chip. He said that they can override the system so it prints a slip to sign but that he was going to have to instruct his staff to do so while he looks into this further.0 -
Can I just draw your attention to another security risk at Tesco's tills? They haven't linked up the machine to allow you to put your card into in - you are forced to hand over your card to the checkout person who swipes it. Now, the WHOLE point of C&P and the reading machines is to allow you to keep a hold of your own card and not give it to anyone else who COULD read your three digit security code on the back of it. Once they have your receipt and your three digit code they can merrily buy things over the internet and by phone.
Tesco's are the only major supermarket to insist that the customer hands over the card to staff - every other one, including M&S, have the numberpad machine linked to the till thus allowing customers total control over their cards.
Shame on Tesco for bypassing the security features of C&P.0 -
Some M & S and Sainsburys stores still require the card to be handed over to the assistant who swipes it through a reader on the side of their screen before the customer can enter their pin number on the keypad.0

The staff are being 'encouraged' to ask the customer to hand over the card - if you decline and indicate that you want to use the keypad machine instead they have to let you. Its' only Tesco which hasn't linked up. A real security issue - you shouldn't be handing your card (debit or credit) to anyone at all these days. Restaurants have mobile machines, some bluetooth and some with long curly wires, so that you have no reason to give anyone access to your three digit security number. Otherwise, hide your number - Tippex it over and keep a record somewhere else not connected with your card.0 -

Someone suggested covering it with electrical insulation tape (not sure if it was this forum. That way, you can easily peel it off if you forget the number but it cannot be seen by anyone you hand it to when paying.0 -

Yes - you could hid it that way. Bu, to be really safe and sure of your money, you shouldn't hand your card over to anyone else. Once you lose control of your card you lose control of what's being done to it or with it.
A friend of mine watched a shop employee (not Tesco I hasten to add) actually write down the three digit code from the back of the card whilst waiting for the processing of the payment. Needless to say he called the police.
Any store which insists you hand over your card when using C&P are risking your security.0 -
But Tesco are so big now that they can pretty much do what they like and nobody can stop them. :mad:0

the problem is if the card is stolen...it cannot be retained if the card is still in the customers hand!....0

If the card is stolen, it can't be used so why bother to retain it?0

My local store refused to by pass the chip and pin from 14th Oct as well.
I was in there at the end of Oct with £100 of shopping that had been scanned and packed away.
I forgot my pin number and they wouldn't by-pass it, so i got my shopping taken away. Went out tot eh car to get my cheque book and came back in to be told they had put my shopping away and could i leave.
Complained to Tescos but never heard anything back.
