  • I've just moved house and only plan to be there for 12 months (students in a share house!) - we are with npower for gas and ecotricity for elec - but I don't know what our bills are like yet.

It seems that the only price cap option left is with Scottish Power, am I right about that? I'm finding this whole thing very, very confusing. I'm an arts student, too many numbers make my head feel like it's gonna explode! But I am determind to try and make savings so will perserve!

I've looks at the comparison sites, but am aware that BG increases won't be showing on them. Am being told that E-on is the cheapest if I cap with them, but BG is showing as cheapest on Money supermarket.

Any help or words of encouragement would be much appreciated!!

    Hi
Everyone, I applied yesterday for BGs fix on line yesterday for the Dual Fuel Fix until December 2009.

I received confirmation of my e-mail at 12:19, before BG announced their price hike.

I have 'phoned Uswitch and BG this morning to check that I would qualify for the offer but Uswitch just gave me a BG telephone no where it was all automated and just stopped when it asked for a customer ref beginning "85"

I really want to know whether I will have been accepted, otherwise I will try to seek another capped rate. I am currently with EDF.

    Please could anyone advise?

    Cheers,

    Steve

I think you should be ok, as I was told on the phone at 4.00pm that it was open until end of day.

I was told I would be sent paperwork in the post ..

British Gas Price Protection 2009 was the cheapest for me yesterday.. but I missed out!!

Not wanting to have any further regrets, I have opted for Scottish Power Fixed Price Energy 2009 (which was second cheapest before it was removed from the comparison websites). I am already a Scottish Power customer, which means I miss out on any cashback, but its slightly cheaper than e.on and is capped for a month longer.

Since the website was at a standstill, I took up the offer over the phone. I am however left a bit confused and I hope someone can clear this up..

On the phone, the lady I spoke to mentioned that based on my previous readings, they have now set my bill to £108 per month. Also, meter readings will not be taken regularly, since they now work on a 6 month cycle(?), and I will receive a letter requesting the meter reading when the time comes.

I am a bit confused.. is this how all capped tariff works? I thought it was the unit price that was capped, not the monthly charge?

And if I use considerably less units this coming year than I did last, will I be overcharged? And possibly worse, if I use considerably more, will I be left with hefty bills to pay in the second half of the year?

It's the cost that is capped, nothing else.

I was told I could still enter meter readings online ...

You just have to manage how much you pay them ... so it's up to you if you end up in the Red so to speak ... or you can pay them more to keep it even ...

  • yep, website has crashed, as has my brain.
  • I am on click energy 5
Should I cap? or hold on for what may come along?

    Please Help

  • I switched my Gas & elec to BG yesterday morning via Energyhelpline to Price Guarantee tariff Dec 2009.. I rang BG today and have been assured by them that I will get this tariff despite prices having been increased that day.
To anyone ringing BG the automated voice mail service gives you loads of options which takes forever, however, ignore them all and you will be put through to an adviser - eventually.

I'm similar to you.....capped last weekend with BG,[from EDF], but BG haven't confirmed anything at all! I don't know wether I am a BG customer at all, and if I am, was I capped at the pre 35% rate [2009 cap] or the post 35% rate [2011]. Of course, in trying to contact BG to ask them is proving impossible. That MD of BG on GMTV this morning......so arrogant. He cares diddly squat about his so called "valued" customers.

I'm from Canada and frankly, the number of suppliers, rates, tariffs etc... confuse me completely. I'm beginning to think this is deliberate. And despite living here for seven years (thank GOD we're moving back to Canada in the new year!) its still a minefield.

We've moved from BG to NPower to EDF and now I have to try to sort out the wheat from the chaff yet again! The increase in our last quarterly electric and gas bills (both to early Summer) illustrate how these constant price hikes are eroding any seasonal savings you get. May to October is usually the low usage period for most householders, but the energy companies seem determined to get full whack, 12 months of the year.

Yes, I realise there's a number of factors, including speculators, thats driven up the price of energy, but how much is enough?

Sorry for the rant, but we're trying to save for a major move next year and every penny counts. Our budget is stretched to max now and we're far from wasteful.

And breath.............so, where to go from here? We've got at about another 8 months in the U.K. Is it worth switching to a cap, if there's anything left? Not all suppliers have posted their price hikes yet. How long before the dust settles? Gah!
