My friends got my son a large tin money box that has to be opened with a tin opener. We have been saving for nearly a year now, when it is full we will use the money towards a holiday. I like this because when it is full we then put the tin in the recycling and we don't end up with lots of money boxes!
How about sponsoring an animal at a nearby zoo, farm etc. I know that the Sealife Centre and Monkey world do it in this area?
Or fill up a small box with things like a newspaper, argos catalogue, money, magazines, short letter, photos, anything that maybe become collectable ie. Wallace and Grommit mug or other advertising freebies. The box is then sealed and opened on the child's 18 birthday. My cousin did this at his son's naming day and everyone brought something for the box which was then sealed and placed in the attic.

Just had our sons baptism last weekend, the best gifts we got were money! Ddin't care if it was only a fiver (and loads of people gave £10-20) 'cos we can put it away for him in his trust fund so he really will get the benefit from it when he's 18. The worst gift we got was a silver scroll holder, tacky, unoriginal, useless & worse still it's been engraved with the wrong date! We also nominated a chairty in his name & quite a few people have donated to that, the charity are sending us a certificate that we can keep for him.
I used Finc's memory album lady too & she desigend & made me a BEAUTIFUL guest book for the day, I wanted a Noahs ark design & she sourced one & made a fab book which everyone has written "wishes" for Spud in, we are going to put away for him. I liked it so much she has just made me a matching photo album! However, if you do go with her, she is pregnant & suffering a bit at the mo so I think she would appreciate as much notice as possible. That aside, I can't recommend her highly enough!Post Natal Depression is the worst part of giving birth:p

What about some (vaguely time-capsule) things to put away and keep for when he's older, eg Guinness book of Records for this year, the CD single/album that was number one in the charts on his birthday. If you could get hold of a back-copy of a newspaper from his birth date and wrap it in acid-free paper in a pretty box, it'll be something to cherish and have fun with in years to come.0

Lillibet, just seen your Noah's Ark design on the site (at least I assume it's yours). It's gorgeous.:smileyhea0

What about the new £5 silver crown issued for the Queen's 80th birthday..?
They're on sale at most Post Offices. Would be nice to keep. Especially as she was 80 on the baby's year of birth.
I gave some friends some money for their baby's christening and they put it towards a camcorder. An ongoing gift to record baby's days.
