switching from tiscali dial up to talk talk broadband package?

Options
Hi, My current phone and line rental is with BT and my internet (dial up) is with tiscali. I want to switch to talk talk home phone, broadband & line rental as I'm paying far more than £18.12 a month even though I'm on dial up. My questions are:

Are Talk Talk any good now?
What is a router & why do I need oneconfused-smiley-013.gif?

  • Check whether you can get "free" broadband from TalkTalk in your area. Not all places can. I believe that their service has improved but I don't use them for broadband, so don't take my word for it.
A router is a piece of equipment that connects your pc to the internet via the phone line. It is essential if you are going to connect more than one computer to the internet. It will also have a built in firewall which will help protect your computer from various security threats that come via the internet.

Personally (and I appreciate that not everyone will agree...) I would stay with Tiscali rather than TalkTalk... I had no end of trouble with TalkTalk and had to deal with their moronic support for HOURS - eventually I gave up and cancelled - they tried to charge me for leaving before the end of 12 months and I had to point out their breach of contract and threaten them with court before they dropped it... utterly utterly useless!

  • I moved from Tesco to talk talk for all telephone calls, broadband and landline rental. Because they were cheaper. Unfortunately I am tied into an 18 month contract now. I had delays in the initial connections and had to talk with their tech support for hours which was an absolute waste of time, they were useless! I have intermittant broadband, most days I do not have a broadband connection until midday. I have mirco filters on my telephone sockets and and upto date router.
I have contacted them many times to no avail. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I cannot wait till this contract finishes and I will switch as soon as I can.

I switched to TT phone and BB recently and after sorting out some initial problems (loosing connections) that were associated with the actual setup everything is fine. I went through their forum for help (they were excellent) didn't bother with the help line as most suggest its not up to scratch.

Incidentally once you switch to TT for both services and you want to leave at a later date you may first have to get your line switched to BT before you can go elsewhere. There is obviously a cost (£125) and then a BT fixed contract associated with such a move. This position may have changed since I moved but that how it used to be.

benny5 - the £125 for BT to reclaim your landline still applies unfortunately...a total con in my book....
